Museum for German and Austrian Art The extended Neue Galerie collection is comprised of works belonging to Ronald S.

The mission of the Neue Galerie New York is to collect, preserve, research, and exhibit fine and decorative art of Germany and Austria from the first half of the twentieth century. The museum collection covers a range of media, including painting, sculpture, works on paper, decorative arts, and photographs created in Austria and Germany between 1890 and 1940. y, and to the museum itself. The Austrian material emphasizes the special relationship that existed in Vienna circa 1900 between the fine and decorative arts. Major artists in the field of fine arts include Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, and Richard Gerstl. Decorative arts include the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) and the designs of such well-known figures as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche. The architects Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner are also represented. The collection of German art focuses on important movements of the early twentieth century. Max Beckmann, as well as Expressionist artists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde, receive special attention. The Bauhaus is well represented, with strength in the area of decorative arts. Artists of note who were affiliated with the Bauhaus include Theodor Bogler, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, László Moholy-Nagy, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Oskar Schlemmer, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. Holdings of Neue Sachlichkeit material include both well-known and less familiar artists, including Albert Birkle, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Karl Hubbuch, Felix Nussbaum, and Georg Scholz.

Carl Grossberg was educated at the Bauhaus, and developed an interest in depicting architecture. What you can see here is Marktbreit, a small city in Bavaria surrounded by hills. The telephone pole bisects the painting, directing our gaze upwards toward the two towers and the mountains in the distance. The picture is balanced with such mathematical precision that it feels artificial – an arrangement of shapes and pleasing colors. There is no atmosphere. The town is empty, void of people, of life. It looks a little bit like a model. Is this really an old town?

This work was featured in the special exhibition “Neue Sachlichkeit / New Objectivity,” which was on view at Neue Galerie New York from February 20 through May 26, 2025.

Gustav Klimt took up landscape painting purely for his own pleasure, yet these noncommissioned idyllic scenes were highly coveted by collectors. He devoted much of his summer holidays while vacationing on the Attersee to such works and favored a square format—a reflection of his amateur pursuit of photography.

A warm summer day, wandering in the lush forest…

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner maintained that the vivid spectral colors in his Swiss landscapes and interiors were based on his perceptions of nature, despite their visionary intensity. In a letter to the artist Nele van de Velde written shortly after arriving in Davos in 1918, Kirchner remarked, for example, on the magical illumination of the Alpine night: “The cabins simply black, everything else yellow-green. I’ve never before seen such a fullness of light.”

This work was featured in “Ernst Ludwig Kirchner,” an exhibition that opened at Neue Galerie New York on October 3, 2019.

On this we salute Theodora (aka Teddy), the Neue HUND, who takes her role at the Neue Galerie very seriously. 🐾

Teddy is a loving, curious, and mischievous pup, with a very important role at the museum as Director of Morale. As you can understand, we were sad to close the galleries for the Summer 2026 building restoration project, but she has kept up the cheer at the office all summer long, and checked in on the construction progress to make sure we are ready to reopen Autumn 2026!

PS: Teddy is also the face of our Neue HUND line, which is available exclusively at the museum’s Design Shop.

Have you been having wild, colorful dreams?

Franz Marc’s 1912 painting, “The Dream,” features a n**e female figure sleeping in the foreground. She is surrounded by animals of various colors and types, seemingly the topic of her dreams.

This work by Franz Marc was featured at the Neue Galerie in “Franz Marc and August Macke: 1909-1914, ” which was on view from October 4, 2018 - January 21, 2019. The exhibition focused on Marc and Macke’s artistic relationship, how their lives intersected, and how their art was developed and received during their lifetimes.
