Six inflatable robotic sculptures by Chico MacMurtrie / Amorphic Robot Works are remotely deployed at various spatial and geopolitical
borders to create a soft archway, a peaceful metaphor for the desire for more connection. Borders can appear hard and fixed on maps, in language, and in space. But these borders are constructed and ultimately malleable. Border Crossers comprise a series

of lightweight robotic sculptures that poetically explore and question the notion of borders and boundary conditions. The inflatable sculptures, working in tandem, rise up to several stories high and extend, giraffe-‐like, across a given threshold. Their choreographed performance, originating on both sides of the border, would stage a symbolic connection.

Thank you to Ella Spungen of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for highlighting Chico MacMurtrie’s Border Crossers project and film at Pioneer Works’ Second Sundays. As she writes:

“MacMurtrie’s massive ‘Border Crosser’ sculptures, inflated and deflated, seemingly alive. The artist, a Red Hook local, operated the robotic sculpture often found arching over the U.S.–Mexico border wall as several children scrambled over it. MacMurtrie’s new film, Border Crossers, premiered in the same space later that day.”
