Taylor Thursday: “Cloven Kingdom” 🎭
First performed in 1976, Paul Taylor’s “Cloven Kingdom” takes a sharp, and sometimes surreal, look at what happens when the polished surface of civilized society begins to reveal its underbelly.
Set to music by Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Cowell, and Malloy Miller, “Cloven Kingdom” brings together Baroque elegance and driving, percussive energy. Dressed in tailcoats, gowns, and striking mirrored headpieces, the dancers begin in a world of refinement that gradually gives way to something stranger and more be***al. 🎶
There’s humor throughout, but also an edge, as Taylor plays with the contrast between polished appearances and the impulses hiding just beneath the surface.
Last performed by the Company in New York City in 2022, “Cloven Kingdom” returns this November as part of Paul Taylor Dance Company’s 2026 New York Season. ✨
📅 November 14, 17 & 21
