Irving Ramsay Wiles’s career was shaped by his studies with William Merritt Chase and his years as a resident of New York’s famed Tenth Street Studio Building. Strongly influenced by French art, Wiles became one of America’s foremost portrait and figure painters, known for his refined draftsmanship, dynamic brushwork, and luminous Impressionist sensibility.
The cover image, Gladys, offers a more personal glimpse of the artist’s practice. The sitter is Wiles’s daughter, Gladys Lee Wiles, who would later follow in her father’s footsteps as an accomplished painter and Associate National Academician.
Throughout his career, Wiles moved between portraiture and plein-air painting, from fashionable figures and intimate family portraits to the gardens, shores, and landscapes of Long Island. His work reflects the lasting influence of Chase and French Impressionism, interpreted through an distinctly American lens.
