to a night rooted in legacy. ✨

Earlier this summer, Century of Black Theater Making: Living Legacy Gwendolen Hardwick brought the room together through mentorship, artistry, and community. From scene readings and poetry from Hardwick’s work, to powerful performances by Dominique Morisseau, Claro de los Reyes, LaVonda Elam, and NSangou Njikam, every moment honored a career dedicated to creating space for Black and q***r artists.

The evening moved with intention, blending spoken word, music, and storytelling in a way that felt both grounded and uplifting. Hearing directly from artists she’s mentored, it’s clear that this is a legacy being lived in real time.

Looking back, the impact still resonates. In a time when we’re constantly asking where theater is headed, this night was a reminder that it is still alive, necessary, and shaping what’s next.

Grammy Award-winning jazz icon Cassandra Wilson refused to be boxed in.

Her sultry contralto range made her one of the most distinctive voices of her generation, however she preferred the term "musician" over being categorized solely as a "singer". And though she opened for jazz greats like Miles Davis and Wynton Marselis, she was also known for experimenting with pop, folk, and global soundscapes.

She once told Time Magazine, “We live very segmented lives. “There’s Black music and there’s white music. There’s R&B and funk and whatever. This has always bothered me. People don’t see things in streams, they don’t see what tends to connect us all together. That’s what I see. That’s what I try to get at.”

Ms. Wilson meant so much to us here at The Apollo, and it was a true honor to welcome her to our stage as she celebrated the release of her 16th and final studio album, "Coming Forth By Day".

We send our deepest condolences to all of Ms. Wilson's family and loved ones. The music world has lost a true titan.

Harlem was outside this past weekend‼️ From Saturday to Sunday, was one for the books. Our Apollo Theater x Sprite activation brought the decades to life with a vinyl to viral custom photo booth & signature wall causing plenty of buzz on Theater Row.

We kept the energy going with lite bites from our restaurant partner, The Nephew, and the livest set by DJ Whutever turning our booth into an all-out party that had the whole street dancing.

And Sunday? Our Amateur Night alums Greginald Spencer, Jeremy Cousar, and Mariah Rae Starr shut it DOWN during + special appearances on stage from Arnstar of Clean Money Music and Harlem Week Honoree Sherri Shepherd. See some of our favorite highlights.

The party of the summer did NOT disappoint‼️

returned to the East End for a night of legendary soul all in support of The Apollo’s future.

From electrifying musical performances by DJ Cassidy, Bobby Brown, Estelle, Brownstone, and DJ Aktive to dinner, drinks, and dancing against the marina backdrop, it was a night to remember.

And the impact? More than half a million raised throughout the weekend to support the renovation and restoration of our Historic Theater.

Thank you to our generous Board Members, supporters, and sponsors for keeping our iconic institution shining for the next generation of creators and artists.
