Old Masters, New Amsterdam exhibition at New York historical Society is on view until August 30, 2026. This is a great opportunity to see Dutch Old masters paintings that help us visualize New York City as a tiny Dutch settlement 400 years ago. And the last photo is a little added inside joke about the Dutch name “knickerbocker”, the fictional Dutch historian and also Washington Irving’s pseudonym. Go Knicks!!

Vito Acconci created a 1992 site-specific seating installation in the outdoor plaza in front of Klapper Hall at Queens College.. The title is is “More Balls For KlapperHall”, but it is also sometimes referred to as “Untitled”.  Another title is “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”.  

According to the artist:  The orbs are hollowed out and sliced, allowing people to meet. I like the idea of a building where people can use the outside for other things. I always like a plaza where there are benches - but I like it more when people decide to sit on the steps, which is sort of like the first radical act. The first act of revolution: a bench has told me to sit down, so I’m not going to sit there, I’m going to sit where I will bother people walking up the stairs.

Side note: the Queens College Campus Quad is built upon the 1908 architecture that used to be the New York Parental School, a reform school for boys that closed in 1934.  Queens College took over in 1938.
