How to finish your bias tape ends. Last year I showed you how I finish the ends of my bias tape. But since then I’ve changed up my technique and now it’s time I share it with you! This technique is less fiddly, and easier to finish perfectly, with less chance of error. Firstly, sew your bias tape inside out. You want this seam to be fairly small, I did 0.7cm and trimmed to about 0.4cm. Next, trim off the corners, and clip into where the fabric folds. Turn the bias tape the right way round, you can always use something sharp like tweezers to push out the corner so it’s nice and crisp. Now, all we do is tuck the folds, and sew it shut! Make sure you give your bias tape a press for the crispiest and cleanest result.

It’s in the details that no one notices, and for a good reason: it’s meant to be invisible, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy or quick. I always finish my tiny drawstrings and straps with a ladder stitch by hand. I just find that using a sewing machine to close tubes never looks as nice, I’m not a fan of top stitching. And since it’s such a small tube- 5mm, the machine will typically eat it up anyway. It’s just a recipe for a tangled mess.

Bonjour. Let me show you the prettiest way to elevate your sewing, and why you’ll love French seams! This technique is perfect if you don’t have an overlocker, or you’re working with sheer or lightweight fabrics. Just follow the steps below: 1. Sew your fabric wrong sides together, I did a 0.7cm seam allowance. Anything within the range of 0.5-1cm will work! 2. Trim your seam allowance, about half. 3. Press your fabric with your seam allowance to one side, depending on where the seam is in your garment, most seams are pressed towards the back of the body. 4. Fold the fabric over, so your fabric is sandwiching your first seam, all raw edges will be enclosed and you should be now looking at the inside of your fabric. With the line you just sewed on the right hand side. 5. Sew again, I did 0.7cm again. You want to sew the second seam allowance larger than your trimmed seam. 6. Press again. 7. Voila!

Let’s drape, and hand sew a knife pleated bustier top 🦋. Well, a quarter of a top anyway. I’m using this lovely blue floral lace to create my favourite fabric manipulation technique of knife pleats! Every pleat is pinned into place, with glass head pins, then steamed and ironed on a foam dress form. Next, each pleat is hand tacked together using a basting stitch, which will then be removed after the pleats are secured using a sewing machine.

Sewing tight curves is easy, if you know where to look! Your eyes should be focused on your chosen seam allowance line on the throat plate, and if your machine has a horizontal line (where the needle enters), then even better! Start by shortening your stitch length, mine is about 3mm, the tighter the curve, the smaller the stitch length. Once you start sewing you’ll get to a point where the edge of the fabric doesn’t meet up with the seam allowance line. You’ll notice this if you’re drawing an imaginary line over the fabric where your seam allowance line is on the throat plate. To amend this, we lift the foot, pivot the fabric to realign, lower the foot, and continue to sew. We repeat this until our curve is finished. It’s important to go slow, feed the fabric very gently, and don’t pull the fabric especially from the backend of the machine.

I’m really bad at voiceovers, but this is me using a loop tuner!!! A nifty little sewing tool that turns tubes of fabric inside out. Insert the loop turner through your tube, and use the sharp end to pierce a small hole through the fabric. Next, you slide the fabric up the hook of the loop turner, and use gentle hands to pull the fabric through. I like to hook the end of the loop turner on the side of my sewing machine because it’s easier to pull the fabric through using two hands.
