Dear PlayCo Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Diana Oh aka Zaza D. A q***r, Korean-American artist and longtime member of the NYC theatremaking scene, Diana had a creative energy all their own, channeled through musical performance, dance and meditation, theater installations, plays, and poetry. Please help support their family in this difficult time by donating to their Memorial Fund here: www.gofundme.com/f/support-zazas-diana-oh-healing-journey

Last month, we were honored to host Diana Oh’s “Brain Massage Music” as part of our Month of Rest series. We’ve included an audio clip from that session here, so that Zaza’s voice and warm synthesizers can “liberate us back into our bodies again” and again. 💌

In his powerful 1957 speech, Albert Camus declared, “To create today is to create dangerously.” Camus found hope in the works of “millions of solitary individuals” whose deeds and art transcend boundaries, just as PlayCo does today.

We continue to reach across borders of all kinds to stand for the free exchange of ideas and unfettered artistic expression. As the world shifts around us, this work is only more necessary - and so is your support. We must raise $20,000 by June 30 to fund the next wave of creative work and undertake the costly nitty-gritty our mission entails, such as securing visas, travel and housing for artist residencies. Visit www.playco.org/event/create-dangerously-playco to learn more and donate today!

How do we take care of each other in this moment? How does care shape the art we make? How can our art take care of us?

On March 5th, join PlayCo and SAWCC for “Performing Care,” a hands-on workshop for artists of all disciplines and experience levels. Theatremaker and educator Adil Mansoor will explore various contemporary artists, including sculptor Simone Leigh and theatermaker Brian Lobel, whose works embody acts of care. Participants will discuss care work and its relationship to gender, q***rness, race, resistance, and survival. Through conversations, games, and writing exercises, participants will begin to brainstorm questions and research prompts for their future projects.

Congrats Jian - this recognition is so well deserved and we love working with you! 🎉 Visionary artist Jian Jung was one of the many winners at the 68th annual Obie Awards, presented by the American Theatre Wing. Her award for Sustained Achievement in Design recognized that her "architectural designs awaken and electrify spaces, revealing the tension and dramatic potential energy in walls we take for granted" and included a call out for her striking set design in Abhishek Majumdar's 9 KINDS OF SILENCE.

"A stubborn calf refuses to leave its mother’s side, but it is the season for them to be weaned – or so you’ve heard the adults say. You observe the scene passively, yet somehow you know you will speak of this at the fireside. You have been raised with tales of the day as entertainment once grandfather has turned down the dial of the radio after the national obituary broadcast is done. Unlike the radio, everyone’s batteries don’t need that much saving. You live this, and don’t know how to call it otherwise." - Katlego Kai Kolanyane-Kesupile

For the first piece in The Hub's CROSSCURRENTS series, we head to Botswana, where Katlego, a writer, activist, and scholar, explores the ways in which theatre and performance exist in the patterns of everyday life, and how investment in infrastructure can help retain and advance Botswanan theatre's sense of cultural identity.
