Beauty can be seductive. It can be complicated. And sometimes, it can be dangerous.

PlayCo proudly introduces esteemed Catalan writer Josep Maria Miró to New York theatre with The Nicest Body Ever Seen Around These Parts, running October 7 through November 7 at 122CC, 2nd Floor Theater (150 1st Ave, New York, NY). Winner of the National Prize for Dramatic Literature, the highest theatre honor in Spain, this liminal, ferocious one-person play surrounds the discovery of a body in a field that reopens a small town’s wounds- their prejudices, desires, and memories of loss. Two-time Obie Award-winner Rachel Crowl, most recently celebrated for her work in Jordan Tannahill’s Prince F*ggot, takes on the acrobatic task of channeling an entire town in Miró’s solo play.

Playwright Yilong Liu met Victor Muñoz i Calafell, head of training and writer relationships at Sala Beckett in Barcelona, during his residency there in 2024. The two were reunited last week during Sala Beckett's visit to Shanghai for the ACT Shanghai Contemporary Theatre Festival, where they presented Helen Tornero's You Promised Me a Love Story. For theatremakers such as Yilong, PlayCo's international residencies offer a jumping-off point for relationships and projects that can blossom for years to come.

On this day, September 9th, 2017, OH MY SWEET LAND, PlayCo’s first collaboration with writer/director Amir Nizar Zuabi, premiered in NYC. The production was staged in private homes and community kitchens across the five boroughs, New Jersey and Westchester and followed a woman, preparing and cooking kibbeh as she recounts stories of love and family amid the Syrian refugee crisis. In her Critic’s Pick review for The New York Times, Alexis Soloski wrote that the play is “about our incomplete ability to wrap our heads around a war being fought half a world away, about our finite capacity for empathy.”

On this day, September 7th, 2023, 9 KINDS OF SILENCE–the culmination of a near decade-long artistic partnership with Abhishek Majumdar–premiered at 122CC. Abhishek, a renowned writer/director from India and the head of the NYU Abu Dhabi theatre program, had worked alongside PlayCo for 9 years workshopping different plays for his U.S. Premiere before landing on 9 KINDS OF SILENCE, a haunting exploration of sound and silence, and the ways that the modern nationstate can twist them into means of control and subjugation.

On this day, August 17th, 2016, CAUGHT, a playful, subversive play written by Christopher Chen and directed by Lee Sunday Evans, premiered in NYC. We built an art gallery inside of La Mama’s downstairs space to introduce the work and musings of a Chinese dissident artist before the play sharply shapeshifts and folds in on itself. Chris won an Obie for Playwriting for his “intricately constructed, unrelentingly destabilizing puzzle of a play” (The New York Times) and the play was nominated for the Drama League’s Outstanding Production Award. Ten years later, this show lives on in the minds of audiences, and still brings smiles to our faces!
