Stephen Hannock draws significant inspiration from 19th-century American landscape painters, particularly Thomas Cole, whose expansive views of the rugged Eastern landscape conveyed both the romantic and the sublime. He’s known for atmospheric vistas and “flooded river” scenes that often embed inscribed text—personal notes, dedications, and historical references—within the painted surface. His signature process layers paint and resin, then sand-polishes between applications to achieve a distinctive luminosity and depth.

After retiring from a long career as a schoolteacher, she developed a distinctive form of abstraction defined by bold patterns, rhythmic composition, and radiant color. in 1966 Richard Diebenkorn moved from Berkeley to Santa Monica, where Diebenkorn accepted a teaching position at UCLA. Within several months of beginning work in his first Santa Monica studio, located in a neighborhood near the beach known as Ocean Park, the artist embarked on the great cycle of paintings and drawings, the “Ocean Park period.” In doing so, he definitively ended his figurative approach, to invent a unique abstract language he would develop until 1988. In 1971, he had his first exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in New York; these three shows became much-anticipated opportunities to observe the unfolding of the Ocean Park vocabulary. In 1977, he moved to New York’s M. Knoedler & Co., Inc, where, over the course of the next decade he exhibited nearly annually. This would become a series of events perhaps even more appreciated than his earlier Ocean Park shows at Marlborough. With the widely noticed traveling exhibition organized by the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York, in 1976, his national reputation as both a figurative and abstract artist, became secure.

Liz was everywhere. On screen and off, in gossip columns and hospital rooms, in diamonds and eyeliner and grief. By the early 1960s, Elizabeth Taylor had become more than a movie star, she was an image distilled—beauty, scandal, resilience, and Hollywood myth made visible.

And Warhol, more than any other artist, knew how to capture someone through their surfaces.

Warhol never needed Elizabeth Taylor to sit for him. He didn’t need intimacy or permission. What he needed—and what he found in abundance—was circulation. Taylor’s face, magnified and multiplied by the media, was already performing the work that Warhol’s art sought to explore: the transformation of person into persona, of glamour into icon, of repetition into meaning.

I recently had the privilege of seeing the spectacular exhibition of Frankenthaler and Caro: Similtudes . It is a beautifully curated and installed exhibition that showcases the two artists spectacular work. The pure joy evident in Frankenthaler paintings, was uplifting and breathtaking to behold. Needless to say I highly recommend making time take it all in.
