⛩️ NEW PAINTING: I had thus far avoided painting this traditional torii at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, mostly because it seemed too iconic and obvious as a subject. Eventually that vermilion red against the various shades of green in the background was impossible to resist. I did a watercolor sketch initially (👉 see 2nd image), which inspired the oil painting.

🎉 Happy to report that this oil study went to a lovely new home on Long Island this past weekend.

🎨 Improved, but NOT new! Back in 2017, I considered these two paintings finished. But over time I felt they needed some oomph. I recently gave them both a major glow-up! Now their colors pop more dramatically.

Inspired by the Water Lily Terrace at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I unintentionally painted the same plant, but one in the spring (top) and the other in the autumn (bottom). Note the same tree reflected in both!

Both are oil on canvas , 12 x 24 inches.

Same painting, 9 years apart. Back in 2017 I considered it finished. But every time I took it out, it seemed dull and uninspired. So, a couple of months ago, I removed the varnish and updated it!

Originally it was an early springtime view, just before the lily pads develop their stripes. But using a little artistic license and reference photos, I introduced the emerging coloration.

🖼️ New commissioned painting just went to its forever home. An amalgam of a real Park Slope brownstone in bright spring sunshine with added features: a blooming cherry tree and a box of free books. A memento of a special period in the client's life.
