A caravan of Broadway stars found themselves in upstate New York for a weekend of musical theater outdoors. What could go wrong?

Surprising to no one, I was a child RentHead. I saw RENT on Broadway 13 times. It was the turning point from seeing theater because my parents got us tickets to seeing theater because I just HAD to get my butt in that seat again to experience the joy, the music, the energy. It was the first show where my baby brain started to track ensemble members who graduated to principal roles and new cast members who I had seen in other shows. I played the CDs (it was a 2 disc set!) on my stereo in my room and then in my car in high school and then on my Walkman going through Washington Square Park on my way to class at NYU. I shouted the lyrics to La Vie Boheme years before I had any sense of what I was actually singing. And then! AND THEN! I got to spend the past year reaching out to the original cast members and asking them to take that 'leap of faith' and join us for this 30th Reunion. I warned every performer on every Zoom leading up to The Festival that I'd be crying during 'Seasons of Love'. Jokes on me. I cried at the first guitar riff. At Gilles' gorgeous rendition of 'Will I?'. At Rodney and Wilson bringing down the house with 'I'll Cover You'. Thank you to the OBC of RENT. For coming to The Festival. For being delightful with every Zoom, text, and phone call this past year. For letting me and the entire audience feel like an us for once, instead of a them.
(Shoutout to Gilles for the photo FROM THE RENT SOUNDCHECK STAGE as I cried, hugging my son.)

Among the stars and stans at a Hudson River retreat, two reporters beheld the big belters and niche merchandise at a new musical theater festival.
