✨MEET BONITA JACKSON, creator of the new one-woman show Black WOMBman,”a praise to Black maternal love, joy, and resilience.”✨

Bonita Jackson is a believer, mother, wife, actress, writer, and teaching artist based in NYC. Bonita has written, performed, and produced four one-woman shows, and has performed in theatres and festivals in NYC for over ten years. She holds an MFA in Acting from FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.

✨Black WOMBman is her FIFTH solo show!✨

IN HER OWN WORDS:
I have been passionate about Black maternal health for some time now. But it was when I decided that I was ready to be a mom that it struck me - this fear. This fear that said : “Oh my gosh, what if I don’t survive pregnancy? What if I die during childbirth because I am a Black woman?” From there I did all I could to ensure I would survive. And along the way I spoke with so many Black women who had similar fears, some who had experienced traumatic medical care during their pregnancy and/or childbirth. So many of these women are still holding onto what happened to them. There is so much healing that needs to happen. After my own traumatic experience during postpartum, it was clear to me that I needed more than a social media post to express how I feel about the Black Maternal Health Crisis, and to share these women’s experiences who have felt silenced in some ways.

Don’t miss the work-in-process performance of Bonita’s new show on Sunday, November 16th at 6:30PM at Art House Astoria Conservatory for Music and Art, 23-35 Broadway, Astoria, NY, 11106.

We like to melt perceived barriers between audiences and artists. Especially during the development of a new work.

Audiences are the ultimate litmus test. They can be a compass, a mirror, a guide.

The Anthropologists is thrilled to present a work-in-process performance of a new research-based solo play Black WOMBman by performer and writer Bonita Jackson.

Developed with a grant from the Queens Art Fund, Black WOMBman uses dance, poetry, theatre and song to soulfully examine the Black maternal health crisis in the United States. We are honored to be able to amplify this project by providing space rental funds, production support, childcare reimbursement and dramaturgical support.

Tickets are free with RSVP. Please join us for the 45-minute performance and brief discussion as we help Bonita develop this vital new piece of theatre.
