It’s Black Maternal Health Week! We are taking a moment to shine a little light on the incredible Black midwives and doulas we met during the creation of “axes, herbs and satchels”. Their hands and their hard won wisdom are literally changing the world!

This year, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance has given Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) the theme: “Rooted in Justice and Joy” This is a powerful message that we want to amplify! Black and brown birthing bodies deserve to be safe AND celebrated during pregnancy and birth! Thank you to all of our beautiful doulas and midwives!! ✨

This month, Artistic Director Melissa Moschitto was invited back to Hofstra University as part of Revolutions 250: Untold Stories, a semester-long, campuswide interdisciplinary initiative. With this inspiring mandate, we asked the students to read our research-based play about the history of Black midwives: “axes, herbs and satchels.”

In our Guest Artist event, “Field Notes: The Dramaturgy of Devising”, Artistic Director Melissa Moschitto shared our methodology for creating investigative theatre and gave students an inside look at how our devising process builds performance with rigor and curiosity.

This spring we revisited the story of Beulah, a grand midwife and matriarch portrayed by Jan Andree in “axes, herbs and satchels.” Co-Directors Sandie Luna and Melissa Moschitto reunited with Jan for a rehearsal at the beautiful Royal Family Productions theatre. Their spirit of collaborative discovery was photographed by Sandie & Melissa’s theatre kids, Gael and Sebastian. What a joy to learn from Beulah again as we prepared for a Guest Artist visit to Hofstra University.

🎧 New Audio Art Commission! 🎧

Carve out a little space for listening to something beyond time, something calming and mysterious: experience Deilf an Iarthar or The Dolphin of the West, an audio theatre experience created by artist Patrice Miller. ( )

Patrice has been traveling to and from Clare Island, Ireland over the past several years to collect interviews and natural recordings of the island’s inhabitants. Beginning with a process rooted in anthropological and sociological interviews, observational fieldwork, and traditional research, the data is coded for art creation and wedded to original scoring by Clare Island musicians.

Patrice’s approach is very much in conversation with our creative methodology and they have been dear and valued advisor and collaborator for many years. Needless to say, we are thrilled to have commissioned this fascinating piece of digital storytelling!
