The third and final awardee that we are featuring is Eduardo Machado. Author of over 40 plays, Eduardo has taught playwriting and served as an artistic associate at The Public, the Flea Theater, and The Cherry Lane Alternative, and he was a playwright in residence at The Mark Taper Forum. He was the artistic director of the Off-Broadway INTAR Theatre in NYC and is a member of the Actors Studio, the Ensemble Studio Theatre, and is an alumnus of New Dramatists.

Eduardo was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to the U.S. with his brother at the age of 8. Eduardo's plays often explore Cuban culture. In an interview with Castillo Theatre’s Artistic Director Dan Friedman, Eduardo expressed, “When I first wrote these Cuban plays, I thought they were personal. Once they were produced, I realized nothing about Cuba is personal. It’s all political. Over the years I’ve come to realize theatre has to have a political message. Otherwise, why do it?” We are thrilled to present Eduardo Machado with the Otto Award for Political Theatre, and it’s not too late to celebrate his work with us!
