OPENING THURSDAY, 11 MAY: Sperone Westwater is pleased to present 'Melancolia', new glacier paintings by Warren, Connecticut-based artist Alexis Rockman, his fifth solo at the gallery. Presented amidst the critical ecological moment of global warming and climate crisis, this exhibition delivers an urgent, if not cautionary vision of the environmental state of the planet. In these epic works, glaciers of massive scale tower forebodingly, their monumentality underscored by the inclusion of small-scale foreground elements such as traditional kayaks of Arctic indigenous peoples. Rockman simultaneously looks to the past, referencing historic shipwrecks like the ill-fated USS Jeannette in his painting of the same name, while grounding himself firmly in the present, as calving icebergs or cascading waterfalls of melting ice reflect the state of our warming climate. Exhibited alongside his glacial works are watercolor seascapes that imagine artifacts lost to the ocean and the wildlife that inherit them, further mythologizing the creative and destructive forces of the natural world.

Sperone Westwater is pleased to present Kevin Umaña’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, Wayfinding, featuring new “hybrid paintings” which merge glazed ceramics and painting on canvas, extending his previous concentration on abstract geometric paintings. They reflect his upbringing in El Salvador, the impact of the landscape and memories shared with his mother.

Sperone Westwater is pleased to present OPEN CALL FOR BLUE LEMONS, Kim Di**le’s sixth solo exhibition at the gallery. In her new series of paintings, Di**le’s longstanding alter ego, Priss, thinks she is now old enough to audition for fashion week. Demure and ferocious, dolled up in her classic frilly white dresses, Priss twists her limbs and contorts her torso into runway-ready poses. Di**le’s paintings pivot sharply on the contrast between the prim children she depicts and the adult behavior in which they engage—in this case, suggestive and provocative gestures of the body learned from the fashion industry’s commodification of the female figure. The subjects are vehicles for self-portraiture, whether of Di**le herself or in the guise of her partner, the Haitian-born Aude Charles, who as a former model and modeling instructor advised each pose in this series.

Opening this morning! Sperone Westwater is pleased to present Peter Sacks: Above Our Lands, the artist’s second exhibition at the gallery. New paintings, as well as works on wood and on paper, continue and extend the artist’s distinctive practice of merging paint, collage and diverse fabrics. Dramatic shifts of scale—from our miniaturized human dimension to forces gathering above us—evoke recent historical forces sweeping above our lives, be they war, disease, climate change, system collapse or incipient totalitarianism.
The gallery will be open until 7PM this evening for the opening.
