Artist and Lycée Français faculty member Mireille Miller developed the plan for Women Leading the Way, her painting series, after realizing that the long roster of women who had made important contributions to our world was largely omitted from the public mind. Many significant women were either under-recognized or, in some cases, completely unknown in spite of their notable achievements. Her determination to contribute a work of art, which would help correct the historical record, led her to hundreds of hours of preparatory research and investigation.

The Suffrage Movement is deeply rooted in the Abolitionist Movement, which first gave rise to organized advocacy for women’s rights. Long before women won the right to vote, abolitionists were already challenging systems of injustice and imagining a more inclusive democracy. Pioneering activists such as Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass stood at the intersection of these struggles. They overcame tremendous adversity, including discrimination from within the suffrage movement itself, to insist that freedom and equality must belong to everyone.

As we honor Black History Month and mark the birthday of Frederick Douglass, we reflect on the vital role Black leaders and organizers played in shaping the fight for women’s suffrage. This photograph of the African-American Officers of the Women’s League of Rhode Island, c. 1899, reminds us that Black women were not only participants in this movement, they were leaders, strategists, and visionaries. Their work laid the essential groundwork for the rights many enjoy today, even as their contributions were too often overlooked.

Our current exhibition, Women Leading the Way, celebrates these intertwined histories and the voices that carried them forward. Through art and storytelling, we honor those who fought for justice across generations and we reaffirm the ongoing work of building a more equitable future.

Observatory Redux by Ann Kronenberg is a large-scale, interactive installation that explores our search for cosmic and personal connection through art. Blending imagery of an observatory, altar, and rocket ship, the work reflects on the human impulse to find order and meaning amid chaos. Through myth, light, and symbolic form, the artist transforms technological ambition into a meditation on inner creativity and spirituality, suggesting that true exploration begins within.

From working as assistant to Tony Smith and George Sugarman in the late 1960s, professor, internationally recognized avant-garde filmmaker, set designer for the NY Opera, to being one of the principal founders of The Painting Center in New York, artist Dana Gordon (b.1944, Boston, USA) has forged a dynamic and multifaceted career.

Critical acclaim for his work has included Linda Gross, in the L.A.Times, 1978: “... for purists and pioneers in pursuit of new perceptions.” John Russell in the New York Times in 1987 “...well worth seeking out...a painter of whom it would be good to see more.” Helen Harrison, NYTimes, 1994: “...beautiful paintings, filled with the controlled exuberance of a carefully orchestrated spectacle.” Grace Glueck, NYTimes, 1997: “... a very lively eyefest.” James Panero, in the New Criterion, 2014: “While many artists paint widely, Gordon paints deeply.... Gordon knows ‘what only painting can do.’

In Gordon’s first exhibition with Carter Burden Gallery, he presents large-scale kaleidoscopic oil paintings. His canvases are a visual conversation between color, shape, and line, where playful forms and vivid hues animate the surface with striking energy.

“A strong interest in color, texture and form has led me to explore the use of clay in combination with other materials including, asphalt, wood, glass and antique tile bands. My background in painting and ceramics is interwoven into the wall reliefs which I have made over the last many years. These pieces have been influenced by a number of sources but perhaps the most dominant one has been architecture. As the President of the Friends of Terra Cotta, a preservation organization that has been devoted, for 40 years, to protecting historic architectural ceramics, I have examined, photographed, researched and written about clay in architecture for over 35 years.” - Susan Tunick

Born in the vibrant borough of The Bronx, New York in 1947, Mitch Lewis’ artistic journey was kindled by his father, a skilled sign painter whose work not only provided for the family but also instilled a deep appreciation for art.

In his current series of ‘Squiggle’ paintings, Lewis embarks on a new exploration. Here, his focus shifts to showcase a sequence of enigmatic hieroglyphs formed by fleeting undulating lines, sprawling across canvases spanning up to eight to ten feet. Within these works, linear forms playfully roll, tumble, shift, and spiral against a backdrop of deep black or blue. Some of his largest pieces are rendered in striking monochrome, while others incorporate vibrant colors that exude energy and life.

“In the endeavor to continue progress in self-expression, I have reconnected with welding.  Creating welded steel via oxy-acetylene.  This process allows for the freedom to be whimsical and playful; forming nature related organic inspired pieces.  Once the welded steel sculpture is completed, I fuse glass onto it in a glass kiln.  It has been a challenging journey.… Welding allows for drawing in space and capturing movement that holds steady in the midst of a full swing of what the arms and hands can do while forming the shapes incorporating heat on steel and careful bending with metal shaping tools and forging.” - Mary Rieser Heintjes
