Congratulations to for receiving a 2025 Creative Capital Award for his play “COMMERCIAL” created with & !!

Creative Capital awarded artist grants totaling $2.45 million to 55 artists to create 49 new works across the U.S. on the basis of their groundbreaking formal and conceptual approaches. The 49 innovative new projects include painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture, video, installation, dance, theater, jazz, opera, multimedia performance, narrative film, experimental film, documentary film, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and multidisciplinary and socially engaged forms.

The new works will explore a range of urgent issues and topics, such as climate emergency, gentrification, q***r ecologies, anti-colonialism, mental health, artificial intelligence, immigration, reparations for slavery in the U.S., and personal stories of motherhood, family, and land.

The Creative Capital Award champions artistic freedom by uplifting risk-taking, underinvested artists with a transformative award that provides up to $50,000 in unrestricted project funding, plus access to multiyear wraparound professional development services and community-building opportunities. THE ONEBEAT KENYA APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN!

OneBeat Kenya, a dynamic two-and-a-half-week creative residency, will bring together 12 trailblazing artist leaders from across East Africa and the United States. Ten artists from East Africa and two artists from the United States, spanning genres and musical communities, will unite to explore new musical horizons and sharpen their professional and entrepreneurial skills.

Set in the inspiring Distant Relatives Ecolodge in the town of Kilifi, just a short drive from Mombasa, OneBeat Kenya will immerse participants in a thriving music scene, rich in culture and energy. This residency offers an intensive program full of creative workshops, discussions,and hands-on exercises, along with master classes, music recording sessions, and filmmaking projects.

OneBeat Kenya Fellows will also take part in meaningful engagements with the local community, forging lasting connections. OneBeat Kenya is more than just a residency; it’s an exhilarating journey of collaboration and creativity, set to ignite new possibilities and inspire future collaborations across continents.

OneBeat Kenya is organized in collaboration with Guest Artistic Director Nyokabi Kariuki (), an accomplished Nairobi-based composer and researcher.

Producers and sound makers there is a whole world of unique global sounds for you to use for your next creation!

For the last few years Found Sound Nation partnered with Splice to create a range of interactive sound packs for producers! These packs, produced with Splice’s ‘Sonic Collective’ label, feature sounds from artists across the globe—from Morocco to Indonesia, Kenya to Turkey, and more

1. Kora w/ OneBeat 2015 Alumni
The West African kora is an instrument that isn’t easily defined. Combining aspects of both the harp and lute, its 21 strings are plucked by both hands in tandem to create a sophisticated polyrhythmic sound. For this sample collection, Sonic Collective & Found Sound Nation teamed up with Vieux Cissokho, a virtuoso kora player and Griot storyteller from Senegal. This collection features a set of beautiful hypnotic kora melodies and polyrhythms as well as classic kora ostinato riffs, “kumbengo,” and improvised solo runs, “birimintingo,” recorded in Vieux’s studio in Paris, France.

2. Gayageum w/ OneBeat 2012 Alumni
The gayageum is a traditional plucked zither and is one of the most iconic Korean instruments. Often with 12 strings, but upwards of 25, it is an incredibly versatile string instrument. For this sample collection, Sonic Collective and Found Sound Nation teamed up with Kyungso Park, renowned gayageum performer, improviser and composer, to prepare a mix of rhythmic melodies and short gestures, drawing influences from “earth, metal, wood, and silk.” The samples included here were recorded in Kyungso’s studio apartment in Seoul, South Korea.

3. Tabla w/ Dosti Alumni Surojato Roy
Tabla is arguably one of the most expressive drums in the world. With over 30 different tones or ‘bold’ it can seem as if the pair of hand drums,collectively called tabla, are ‘speaking’ rhythm. For this sample collection, Sonic Collective & teamed up w/ master table player and percussionist Surojato Roy to prepare a gorgeous set of traditional and contemporary rhythms.

For the last week, we’ve hosted Fellows from the OneBeat Institute who are developing powerful projects around the globe — a percussion ensemble and education initiative in Iraq; a Lisbon-based sound design studio that elevates socially-responsible works; a digital learning tool inspired by traditional teaching methods in Turkey; an incubator supporting creative artists and ecosystems in Nigeria; and a hip hop education center and archive in Mexico.

OneBeat 15 is accepting applications for 25 global artists from up to 54 eligible countries and territories for a month-long U.S.-based music exchange scheduled in April/May, 2025! Apply today https://1beat.org/apply/

OneBeat is the premier multinational music exchange program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Through a suite of programs designed to use collaborative music creation to promote civic discourse, young musicians explore how artists, institutions and communities can work together to rejuvenate local economies and promote civic engagement through music, technology, and the creative arts.

OneBeat is accepting applications for a month-long U.S.-based music exchange scheduled for the spring of 2025, which will convene 25 musicians from up to 54 eligible countries and territories. OneBeat Fellows will spend approximately one month in an intensive residency which offers a chance for artists to write, produce, and perform original music, and develop strategies for arts-based community engagement. OneBeat Fellows then go on tour across a region of the U.S., performing for a wide array of American audiences, collaborating with local musicians, and leading workshops with youth and community organizations. During the month-long exchange, OneBeat musicians develop projects for their home countries that embody the power of musical collaboration and civic engagement to address shared community challenges.
