30 Year TimeLapse

I’ve set out to create a 30 year long TimeLapse of New York City. The official start date (after years of testing) was July 11th, 2015. I love the small moments like a boat passing by as much as I love the enormous moments like a 95 story skyscraper being built.

I post the sunrise and sunset everyday on Instagram and Facebook. Please follow along here and there!

For all us camera nerds: I am using a dedicated Sony a7s permanently installed in my living room window. The camera uses an AC power adapter that plugs into a UPS battery system (in case of power outage). The camera is triggered by an IR node on an Arduino using code I wrote. I take 1 photo every 30 seconds. The camera is tethered to a dedicated computer which catches each photo using Capture One. From there I’ve written a series of AppleScripts that handle organization of the files. At Midnight each night a script creates a new folder with that day’s date and then takes ALL the photos from the “capture” folder and moves them into there. Then a half hour later another script comes in and copies that whole folder to the backup drive.

I shoot 2880 images per day - - that’s just over 1 million images per year! Roughly 16TB of data per year - which I back up twice!
