The factory floor is silent now. Another voice from the Greatest Generation has slipped into history, and with her passing, the world grows a little quieter. 🕊️🇺🇸 Rosie Virginia Basler has passed away at the age of 100, just weeks before her 101st birthday.

A century of memories.

A century of service.

A century of carrying the quiet strength that helped save the world.

Long before history would call them "Rosie the Riveters," they were simply young women answering a call larger than themselves.

Virginia was one of them.

Raised on a farm in Michigan, she was only 18 years old when World War II reached into the lives of ordinary Americans. As young men left for distant battlefields, she stepped forward and found her own way to serve.

She left home and went to the legendary Willow Run Bomber Plant.

There, amid the thunder of machinery and the relentless pace of wartime production, she helped build B-24 Liberators—aircraft destined for skies thousands of miles away.

Day after day.

Hour after hour.

Rivet after rivet.

Her hands helped create the bombers that carried young airmen into danger and, for many, brought them safely home again.

She never stood in a foxhole.

She never stormed a beach.

Yet her fingerprints were present in the fight for freedom.

Every aircraft she helped build carried the hopes of families waiting at home.

Every completed bomber represented another chance for victory.

Another chance for someone’s son, brother, husband, or father to survive.

But Virginia's service did not end there.

In 1943, she joined the United States Coast Guard SPARS and served in Washington, D.C.

Some may overlook the importance of such work.

She never did.

Neither should we.

Wars are not won by heroes on the front lines alone.

They are won by countless unseen hands working behind the scenes.

By those who build.

Those who prepare.

Those who nourish.

Those who serve without expecting recognition.

Virginia understood that duty takes many forms.

And she embraced every one of them with humility.

After the war, she returned home, built a life, raised a family, and carried her memories quietly. Like so many members of her generation, she rarely spoke about sacrifice because, to her, it was simply what needed to be done.

That was the character of the Greatest Generation.
