Tambaran Gallery

Tambaran Gallery Tambaran is one of New York City’s oldest Tribal Art galleries specializing in exceptionally beautiful museum quality pieces.

Founded in 1979 by Maureen Zarember, the gallery offers an unrivaled expertise in African, Oceanic and North-West Coast American art to private collectors and museums all over the world. Zarember’s eye for authenticity, condition and aesthetic are well established in the tribal art market where she has been helping clients build collections for over thirty years. With a gallery open to the public, she also welcomes young collectors, first time buyers and students. Tambaran’s objects have been exhibited and sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Linden Museum in Stuttgart Germany, the Royal Academy of Arts London, the Royal Academy of Arts Berlin, the Museum of African Art, Smith College Museum of Art, the Heye Foundation of Art, the Minjie Museum in California, the Detroit Institute Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Neuberger Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Canberra Australia, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and Le Museé de quai Branly. Tambaran’s art has been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s BAZAAR and the Estee Lauder “Primitive Worlds” Advertising Campaign. A number of major collections and auction houses have chosen Tambaran as a venue for their masterworks. Examples include the French collection of Hubert Goldet, the Geiger Collection of Pre-Columbian Art and the Pierre & Claude Verité collection.

A glimpse into our latest edition of Conversations at Tambaran Gallery, with our guest speaker and collector Scott Clark. Thank you to all who were able to join us for “Conversation 4.”

The evening brought together exceptional works from Scott Clark’s collection alongside selected pieces from Maureen Zarember’s collection, creating an intimate dialogue around the artistic, historical, and cultural relationships between these objects.

Conversations is an ongoing series centered on the people and stories behind collecting. Through personal perspectives, shared knowledge, and close encounters with remarkable works, each gathering explores how collections take shape over time and how friendship, curiosity, and exchange contribute to the preservation and understanding of cultural heritage.

Dwayne Wilcox’s recent works draw together history, popular culture, and Indigenous resilience.

Skull Hat is inspired by the near-extermination of the American bison between 1830 and 1890, when an estimated 30 to 60 million buffalo were reduced to fewer than 1,000 animals in the wild. This devastating loss was driven by commercial hunting, the global demand for industrial leather, and U.S. military strategies aimed at subduing Native American communities.

Wahumpi (Soup) Hat reimagines the iconic Campbell’s Soup can popularized by Andy Warhol while responding to the brand’s renewed campaigns featuring Moana. Through humor and cultural commentary, Wilcox invites viewers to reconsider familiar symbols and the histories they carry.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for “Conversations 3.”

We were delighted to host an extraordinary evening. Guest Curator Sean Mooney (Managing Director & Chief Curator, Rock Foundation) delivered an insightful presentation, exploring the compelling dialogue between three exceptional works from the Rock Foundation Collection—including Bill Reid’s masterwork A Frog for Addie (1988)—and selected pieces from Maureen Zarember’s collection.

The evening beautifully illustrated how thoughtful collecting preserves vital cultural histories and expands our artistic understanding.

For those who missed the opening conversation, the exhibition is now officially on view.
