Alwan for the Arts

Alwan for the Arts In 2003, Alwan established a center in lower Manhattan which provides a physical base for its diverse cultural activities.

Alwan for the Arts began in 1998, when a group of young New Yorkers—artists, filmmakers and graduate students, mainly of Arab origin—decided to organize public events to showcase the vibrant cultures of the Middle East. Their goal was to create a dialogue with the city at a time when New York lacked cultural programming that reflected the artistic diversity and dynamism of the region. The space also serves as a resource for other arts and community organizations that collaborate with Alwan or use the space for their own activities. Today, Alwan is a vibrant cultural and aesthetic hub that produces up to 100 events each year, including concerts, dance performances, literary talks, poetry readings, panel discussions and theatrical performances. In addition, Alwan offers classes and workshops in dance, music and Arabic language.
