🎂🥳Happy birthday dear Pascale Marthine Tayou

To celebrate Pascale’s birthday we are thrilled to repost images of his gorgeous 20ft piece PLASTIC BAGS (2019) which was acclaimed in New York at #2019

Plastic Bags
2019
Single use plastic bags (approx 20,000-25,000), netting and metal truss
20 feet high x 21 feet diameter (6.1 m. high x 6.4 m. diameter)

“The plastic bag embodies the overconsumption of our societies, the proliferation
of waste, the waste of the planet’s resources and the problem of recycling. Plastic
bags are rotting the environment in the West as well as in Africa or Asia.”
-Pascale Marthine Tayou

Plastic Bags is one of the most iconic ongoing global art projects by the Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou, which was first presented in 2005 for the 51st Venice Biennale in Italy.
In November 2018, Sally Tallant the curator of the 2019 Platform Section commissioned to produce the first American version of Plastic Bags for the Armory Show’s central Town Square location.

Plastic bags are helpful, as well as harmful—they carry goods, cross borders, and contribute to plastic pollution.
Tayou’s large and visually impressive installation, Plastic Bags (2019), takes ubiquitous objects and uses them to create an artwork that offers a colorful commentary on consumerism and globalism.

NASSOS DAPHNIS CITY WALL #1 / Madison Square Park (1969-1985)

In September 1969, Nassos Daphnis was commissioned by City Walls Inc. to realize his first City Wall mural on Madison Square Park at 26th and Madison Avenue in New York City.
His first public commission was 24ft x 24ft and featured 4 concentric circles in primary colors. This giant public installation joined to create a curved rectangle in the center, reminiscent of Roman Greek classical architecture domes, which contrasted fancifully with the very ordinary façade of the building in Madison Square.
Nassos Daphnis CITY WALL #1 remained on view at Madison Square Park until 1985.
