Today, Hungarians around the world celebrate August 20, Hungary’s National Day, commemorating St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary, and the founding of the Hungarian state more than a thousand years ago.

This year, August 20 carries a special cultural connection between Hungary and the United States. 🇭🇺🤝🇺🇸
🎨 The United States is the Guest of Honor at the Festival of Folk Arts (Mesterségek Ünnepe) in Budapest!

Held annually in the historic Buda Castle District, Mesterségek Ünnepe is one of Hungary’s largest and most important celebrations of traditional craftsmanship and folk culture. For several days, the Castle comes alive with hundreds of master craftspeople, folk artists, musicians, dancers, and performers.

Visitors can discover traditional Hungarian crafts through presentations and hands-on activities, including woodcarving, pottery, weaving, embroidery, leatherwork, blacksmithing, basketry, and other traditional techniques passed down through generations.

The festival celebrates the knowledge, creativity, and traditions that form an important part of Hungary’s cultural heritage.

This year, the festival shines a special spotlight on the United States, welcoming American master craftspeople and highlighting the rich diversity of American folk and traditional arts alongside Hungarian traditions. The Guest of Honor program offers a unique opportunity to discover connections between the two countries’ living craft traditions and to celebrate the role of craftsmanship in preserving cultural heritage.

🇭🇺 From the legacy of St. Stephen and the Holy Crown to the living traditions celebrated at Mesterségek Ünnepe, August 20 is a celebration of Hungary’s history, identity, and culture — and this year, of the enduring cultural friendship between Hungary and the United States.

Born on July 20, 1895, a pioneering figure of the 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, Moholy-Nagy revolutionized painting, photography, typography, film, and design, believing that art and technology should work hand in hand. His groundbreaking experiments with 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 continue to influence artists, architects, photographers, and designers around the world.

🇺🇸 After moving to the United States in 1937, he founded the 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀 in Chicago, laying the foundation for one of the world's leading institutions of design education. Today, it continues that legacy as the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, a graduate school within the 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆.

Last week Hungarian jazz took over New York City as vocalist Á𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝘀𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗷-𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗮 presented an unforgettable evening for a full house - in the capital of jazz. 🎹 💥

Featuring the acclaimed 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝘀 duo, the concert brought together guests from cultural and educational institutions, the diplomatic community, and New York’s jazz scene offering a curated program from the duo's recordings alongside American jazz standards, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between Hungarian and American musical traditions. 🇺🇸🎵🇭🇺

The evening culminated in a special surprise: a world-premiere jazz arrangement of the Hungarian folk song 𝘛𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘻𝘪 𝘴𝘻é𝘭 𝘷𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘵 á𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘻𝘵.

Following the concert, guests had the opportunity to meet the artists, continue conversations sparked by the performance, and forge new connections - once again demonstrating the power of music to create a common ground and bring people together across cultures. 🎼🤝🎼

💥 Inspired by the poetry and spirit of Hungarian poet János Pilinszky, 𝗦𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗶 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 brought together contemporary dance, poetry, and music in a complex, multidisciplinary performance that offered New York audiences a powerful and symbolic exploration of the universal themes at the heart of Pilinszky’s work.

🎶 The sound of Johann Sebastian Bach’s timeless masterpiece filled 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹’𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 during 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀, where acclaimed American-Hungarian organist Bálint Karosi delivered a breathtaking performance of the complete 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗲. The packed concert attracted organ enthusiasts, musicians, and leading professionals from the field to experience the unique concert - special thanks to John Cantrell for hosting this wonderful event.

🎭 We wrapped up the month with the USA debut of 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗲, a witty and moving English-language production by the London-based Hungarian 𝗛𝘂𝗯𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆. Through the story of six lifelong friends, the performance explored universal themes of friendship, love, loss, and growing older—resonating with New York audiences and also with members of the Hungarian diaspora, who saw reflections of their own experiences in the story.

We could not be more thrilled that each event created the opportunity for people to experience Hungarian culture firsthand. The strong turnout and enthusiastic response showed that 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 and remains a meaningful part of the city's vibrant and buzzing cultural life. 🗽

Co-organized by the 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘇𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 and spearheaded by Philadelphia’s Honorary Consul 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝘄𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘇, this incredible initiative was made possible through strong external sponsorships.

🌺 Passengers and guests stepping into the terminal were immediately greeted by the high-energy, authentic folk dance performances of the 𝗖𝘀ű𝗿𝗱ö𝗻𝗴ö𝗹ő 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲, while captivating travel films showcased Budapest’s iconic thermal baths, historic castle districts, and hidden culinary gems. To ensure a truly memorable send-off, travelers on the flight received a curated Hungarian travel gift package before boarding, featuring exclusive tourism brochures and goodies, alongside authentic 𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗸'𝘀 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗲𝘀 generously provided by the 𝗧𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗽á𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 🔴⚪️🟢
