The arrival of an estimated 3,000 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota—dubbed Operation Metro Surge—began a period of significant civic unrest with far-reaching impact on public safety, law enforcement, the local economy and workforce, education, and the daily lives of Minnesotans.

This excerpt is drawn from a new documentary theater piece by acclaimed artists Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen titled THE SURGE, including firsthand interviews with communities impacted by a major ICE operation in Minnesota. Conceived as a direct artistic response to those events, THE SURGE is commissioned and developed in partnership with the Guthrie Theater and The Public Theater.

BEFORE CURTAIN: A DAY WITH DANIEL BRAVO HERNÁNDEZ ✨

We spent the day with Daniel Bravo Hernández, who plays Romeo on stage now in Central Park, before he went in to work. We grabbed some food in his neighborhood uptown, talked about bringing Spanish to the Delacorte stage, rode the train downtown, ran into a middle school friend out of nowhere, and took a walk through the park, chatting about all the incredible talent and potential he sees coming out of his community.

ROMEO & JULIET is on stage at the Delacorte through June 28. Learn more about the 5 ways to get FREE tickets: thepublic.nyc/romeoandjuliet
