Romanian artist Ionel Talpazan featured this month at Andrew Edlin Gallery. Read Roberta Smith's review of "April 14, 1561" in The New York Times.

Eddie Martinez creates a whiteout; Sonya Blesofsky pays homage to a building’s past; and a group of artists is inspired by U.F.O.s.

Still young and emerging, the Romanian art market, valued at USD 14.6 million in 2016, has been growing over the past few decades. Sharing a common trajectory with most other markets in Central and Eastern Europe, its success and that of local artists is strongly anchored in the well established and mature Western European market. Still, further growth, local actors argue, must come the way of well-educated art collectors.

According to Art Price’s report earlier this year, the top art collectors and investors are becoming more and more excited by new markets—and not just as a source of undiscovered money, but as a source of unrecognized and unappreciated culture. Eastern Europe is counted as number 4 emerging art market on this list. But much of this excitement remains pointeless to the hundreds of talented artists, galleries and dealers struggling to make ends meet in their home countries. At Artsy Link, our mission is to open up this largely untapped market helping our Eastern European dealer partners to reach the much more attentive market of Western collectors.

Permanent Revolution: Ukrainian Art Today at Budapest’s Ludwig Museum (until 24 June) features works by 40 artists—most dating from the past decade, but with an introductory homage to the satirical, colour-saturated photographs that Boris Mikhailov was producing back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Exhibition at Ludwig Museum aims to uncover work that remains "a blind-spot in the European cultural arena"

When a Romanian friend suggested that Fred should go and visit Brancusi’s studio in Paris, it seemed like a good idea: not only could they share stories of their past and speak in Romanian, but as his friend had hinted, Brancusi could also use the cash—even if Brancusi was known to be reluctant to sell his work. Positioned to make a world auction record for the artist, Christie’s May 15th Evening Sale of Impressionist and Modern Art will bring to the market Constantin Brancusi’s, La Jeune fille sophistiquée (Nancy Cunard), a unique sculpture, cast in polished bronze in Paris in 1932.

Finally, Geta Bratescu's international profile is growing at an exponential rate. A central figure of Romanian contemporary art since the 1960s, her presentation at the Venice Biennale Romanian Pavilion brings together extraordinary self-portraits and collaged images from different moments in her long career. Curated by Magda Radu, the exhibition Apparitions feels like a museum mini-retrospective. Must see!

Serbian-born, New York-based artist Ivana Basic presents her eerie, embryonic sculptures at Marlborough Contemporary. Suspended by steel poles and made from blown glass, cast silicon, and forged steel they reflect society’s fetishization of the “beautiful” idealized body. Must see this summer!
