Axis Theatre Company

Axis Theatre Company Since 1999 Axis Co has produced an eclectic series of original & published plays. Randy Sharp, Dir. premiere of Sarah Kane’s "Crave", starring Deborah Harry.

Axis Company was formed with a mission to present aggressive surrealism, classic vaudeville turns and vanguard adaptation. Through the careful utilization of various media Axis has produced an eclectic series of original and published plays with highly advanced, state of the art technological components that enhance the internal meaning of the material. Past productions include Büchner's "Woyzeck"

, Beckett's "Play", Benjamin Baker's 1848 vaudeville "A Glance at New York" (Edinburgh Fringe & NYC), "Julius Caesar", "USS Frankenstein", “Down There”, “Last Man Club” and the U.S. Axis has also produced the premiere of Marc Palmieri's "Levittown" (directed by George Demas), David Crabb’s “Bad Kid” (NY Times Critic Pick) and Edgar Oliver's "East 10th Street" (Fringe First Award, Edinburgh Fringe; Spoleto Festival USA 2011). Since 2002 they have performed an original children's play, "Seven in One Blow" every December (published by DPS and performed around the country). Their episodic play "Hospital", about the interior life of a man in a coma, is a West Village phenomenon every summer. In 2006 Axis Company produced their first feature film, "Henry May Long", winning 13 film festival awards in the US and Canada.

REVIEWS for "SPECIMEN"

“… in this darkly absurd sci-fi fever dream… 'Specimen', arrives like a transmission from a dying satellite: garbled, abrasive, funny, ugly, unexpectedly moving, and very much alive… (it) may masquerade as a ramshackle sci-fi farce, but beneath its glorious clutter lies a bleakly lucid portrait of a culture drifting through space with poisoned food, broken machinery, and no clear memory of how to get home.” —Theater Scene

AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY: AXIS THEATRE’S 'SPECIMEN' (is)… a frenetic sci-fi satire… (with an) exemplary ensemble… a clever balance between farce and fright…" —THIS WEEK IN NEW YORK

"...given a work that asks what makes an alien different from a human… Sharp… delivers a gut punch." —OffOffOnline

"All actors are firing on all engines throughout the piece, total commitment, which makes for a crazy ride as each engine is pointing in a different direction. Kudos to each one of them…” —The Front Row

Tonight, the Nomad makes its final transmission.

Over the last few weeks, audiences and critics have called SPECIMEN a space oddity, a glorious mess, an exemplary ensemble piece, a downtown punk absurdity, sustained theatrical turbulence, absurdist mayhem, and even unexpectedly moving.

They're all right.

What began as a strange mission into the unknown has become something very much alive—thanks to every artist, audience member, reviewer, volunteer, and supporter who came aboard for the ride.

This is your final chance to join the crew.

🚀 Closing Night Tonight
🕖 7:00 PM

One last transmission.
One last launch.
One last trip aboard the Nomad.
