Audiobooks you can access through your shoes? That’s a new one.

Pan Macmillan, Spotify, and HYPHNT have teamed up on a pair of trainers with built-in technology that connects young readers directly to audiobooks with a tap of their phone.

Now, this isn't where we expected the industry to go, but as audiobooks continue to grow, so do the places people can discover them and the ways stories can become part of everyday life. And we’re very curious to see where audiobook discovery shows up next.

It's officially fall!

Cooler weather gives us plenty of excuses to spend a little more time with audiobooks. Our ideal fall listening schedule includes:

• Morning walks in crisp weather
• Apple picking and trips to the pumpkin patch
• Long scenic drives
• Curling up on a rainy afternoon
• Puzzling
• Knitting, crocheting, or embroidering
• Baking some very cinnamon-forward treats

Did you know there was a time when sighted readers couldn’t buy audiobooks?

When the early Talking Book program began in the 1930s, publishers worried that recorded books could compete with print, so they tightly restricted access to the new format. Agreements with authors and publishers required the recordings to remain solely for blind readers. The records were even labeled that way, and they could not be sold to sighted people or played at public gatherings.

It’s a fascinating piece of audiobook history, especially considering how widely available audio is today. What started as an accessibility initiative would eventually help lay the groundwork for an entire industry.

It's back-to-school season, and audiobooks are becoming one of the most versatile classroom tools. Teachers are using them to model fluent reading, open up books above grade level, support students with dyslexia and IEPs, and to get reluctant readers hooked.

Audiobook fun fact: Thomas Edison was imagining “talking books” almost as soon as he invented the phonograph.

In an 1878 article about the future of his invention, Edison listed “phonographic books, which will speak to blind people” as one of its potential uses.

More than fifty years before the Talking Book Program began bringing recorded books to blind readers, Edison was already imagining recorded sound as a way to make books more accessible.

It's pretty incredible to think about how far that idea has come, and where we're headed next!
