SYNOPSIS: During a brutal summer heatwave, a private detective, suffering through a bit of a midlife crisis, is visited one sweltering afternoon by a baffling old man in a heavy black coat who soon reveals himself to be the husband of a woman with whom the detective once carried out a torrid affair. What follows is a darkly fascinating game of cat-and-mouse, marked by Dostoevsky’s keen insights into guilt and paranoia, as the detective attempts to unravel just what this old man knows of his wife’s infidelities. The situation reaches a boiling point when the detective learns of a mysterious child of questionable paternity, locked away in a grimy motel bedroom, desperately trying to get free.
