Announcing the UCB NY Artistic Directors! ❤️
Please join us in welcoming Iliana, Laura, and Michael who will lead the reopening of UCB New York! We will begin in-person classes in January 2023 at a temporary space in SoHo with a permanent training center and theater space coming shortly. More details to come!
Iliana Inocencio is an actor, writer, acting coach, and director. Her musical sketch comedy group, AzN PoP! was the first all Asian American team to have a long running show at UCB. She also performed on Maude Night with teams Presley and Peach. Favorite TV credits include: Orange is the New Black, The Other Two, and The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show. She's very excited to help usher in the new UCB and has big ideas for the community!
Michael Hartney is an alum of Harold, Lloyd, and Maude Night and co-created Characters Welcome. He previously served as the Artistic Director of UCBTNY from 2018 to 2020. He is the head writer at Brooklyn production company Hatched and is a co-founder of Squirrel Comedy Theatre. His Emmy nomination count remains steady at zero.
Laura Canty-Samuel is a writer, stand up comedian, and alumni of UCB where she was a member of the UCBTNY house sketch team The Foundation. She is currently a writer for a number of animated and live action series with Sesame Workshop as well as head writer for two exciting projects being produced by Holler. Oh, and she was just nominated for two writing Emmys, so there’s that.

Why have you refused to renew the epically funny show Astronomy Club, the first all black crew out of the wildly successful Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, NY which has spawned countless high profile comedians generating billions in entertainment value annually. Astronomy Club has been consistently critically acclaimed, and the sketches have been so incisive, hilarious, and well produced that the show has garnered the enviable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. How is this not being renewed for at least a 5-year run? What idiot made the call to cancel something so successful? Please bring it back and give these actors the spotlight they've earned in homes across the U.S and the world rather than their only being intermittently available to the comparatively infinitesimal audiences they can perform for on stage. Kenya Barris, help!
Meet PATRICK ROMANO, who will be playing JOEY in our upcoming feature film, LOVE & IMPROV!
Chemistry between cast members is an integral part of our casting process for this film and being the love interest, we especially needed to find that in our Joey. Patrick came in and made sparks fly with Grace. Their chemistry was undeniable and powerful. It made our decision to cast Patrick an easy one.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a software analyst, Joey is, unsurprisingly, a bit more low-key. More inclined to stay home and play D&D with his friends, Joey typically doesn’t like to be the center of attention. The fact that Grace is so comfortable being the center of attention is what draws him to her in the first place. He is the order to Grace’s chaos. But, as he spends more time around Heroine he is drawn into their world and begins to see how fun it can be to live out loud, eventually even signing up for an improv class himself. However, the one concern that’s perpetually in the back of his mind is will he ever be able to keep up with Grace’s manic pace?
Patrick is a Chicago-based actor, writer, director, and theatre artist originally from Philadelphia. They have acted in regional theatres and voiced animation. They have written and produced a show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and starred in national commercials. Patrick holds an MFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University and has trained in improv with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, NY.
