Ching Ho Cheng (1946–1989) created Sun Drawing in 1968, shortly after graduating from the Cooper Union School of Art. This radiant, psychedelic composition marks not only Cheng’s first professional painting but also the beginning of his artistic exploration into surrealism, mysticism, and the transformative visual language of the late 1960s.

Rooted in the countercultural spirit of the era, Sun Drawing embodies the experimental energy that defined Cheng’s early practice. Over the following two decades, he would go on to create an extraordinary body of work spanning psychedelic painting, torn-paper abstractions, and visionary mythological imagery—establishing himself as as one of the most original voices of his generation.

The inclusion of Sun Drawing in Sixties Surreal situates Cheng among the groundbreaking artists of his generation, celebrating a pivotal first step in a remarkable career.
