How Danny Simmons' paintings communicate without telling us what to see 🧩

Danny Simmons uses textiles and symbols to convey a sense of ineffable connection to African heritage without resorting to representational interpretation. Black figures, peeking through lace, refuse the viewer's scrutiny and control how much we are allowed to see and know.

13 years ago, Danny Simmons and Brian Tate created a project to bring attention and visibility to New York City artists.

Westwood Gallery NYC exhibited artworks by 25 artists chosen from hundreds of artist submissions from across the 5 boroughs as part of their program entitled Curate NYC.

This year, Simmons’ work will continue to give back to the community through a permanent public installation commissioned by MTA Arts & Design in Jamaica, Queens.

Mary Ann Unger’s 'Benchmark's (1977) is on view through September 6 in 'The Expanding Field: MOCA’s Collection from the 1940s to the 1970s' at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Unger’s organic sculptures, with their sustained engagement with the body, transformation, gender, and mortality, exemplify the experimental spirit of the Bowery. We were honored to have her work on view in 'Artists on the Bowery, Part 3' (2022).

Seeing Unger's work within a major museum collection is a meaningful reminder of these artists' and communities' lasting impact on Post-war American art. Through the 'On the Bowery' exhibition series at Westwood Gallery NYC, we celebrate this shift in the art historical narrative: artists once overlooked or positioned outside the mainstream are increasingly being recognized as an essential part of it.
