Artistic Director Oskar Eustis describes Woody as we would like to remember him “clarity and strength and unstoppable dynamism that made our world a better place”. He made a difference in life’s of artists I have known, worked with and believed in. He knew Gene Frankel and we discussed his viewing of The Blacks. He told me seeing the play in 1961 made a difference in his young life. It inspired him. Rest in Power Woody King Jr.

I feel blessed for my time at the helm of the Frankel and was able to have this conversation and meet an incredible crew like Ziti and Fulton because of SUGAR RAY by Laurence Holder. Starring Reginald L. Wilson

The Public mourns the passing of Woodie King Jr., an extraordinary and vital figure in the history of the American theater, and a cherished friend of the Public Theater.

Woodie founded the New Federal Theater down at the Henry Street Settlement in 1970, where it still flourishes today under the leadership of his wife, now widow, Elizabeth Van D**e. The New Federal was a crucible for the Black Theater movement of the 70’s and 80’s and remains vital and relevant still. Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Denzel Washington, Samuel and LaTanya Jackson, Chadwick Boseman, Amiri Baraka- the list of vital Black artists who began or continued their careers under Woodie’s fine producorial hand is almost literally endless. For us at the Public, his championing of Ntozake Shange was crucial- he mounted the production of FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SU***DE / WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF that Joe Papp brought to the Public and later to Broadway. Without Woodie’s leadership, and later his partnership with us, that production never would have happened and the American theater would have been sadly diminished.

His taste was exquisite and his integrity rock-solid. He knew what he wanted to do, champion the work of black artists, women as well as men, and he did it with a clarity and strength and unstoppable dynamism that made our world a better place. He was a happy warrior: his warmth and good humor lit up every room he entered. We will miss him, but we are grateful beyond words for all he gave us. —Artistic Director Oskar Eustis

Following a sold-out engagement last August as part of the playwrights’ competition 15 Minutes of Frame, THE UNUSUAL CHAUNCEY FAUST by New York indie theatre playwright Coni Koepfinger was selected from more than 100 plays and went on to win the final competition by popular vote, earning first place. The original 15-minute one-act was awarded the opportunity to be developed into a full-length work. Now, by popular demand, THE UNUSUAL CHAUNCEY FAUST returns to the Gene Frankel Theatre stage.
Set in the present, THE UNUSUAL CHAUNCEY FAUST centers on Chauncey Faust, an actor who senses that time is slipping away. From the beginning of his career, Chauncey has felt driven by a purpose beyond ambition or recognition. His relationship to his work — and to his own life — carries a dreamlike quality, shaped by a persistent sense of calling that sets him apart.

Tom G Waites Lucky Man opens June 5th! The story of Waites travels
In Lucky Man, Waites rips the curtain wide open on his wild ride through fame and flameout. The show begins in 1976, just after being kicked out of Juilliard’s Drama Division, and rockets ahead two years later when, at just 23, Waites hits it big with starring with roles in On the Yard, The Warriors, …And Justice for All, and The Thing—working with icons like Al Pacino, John Heard, Kurt Russell and many others, as alcohol destroyes his career, marriage, and family before finding redemption, serenity, and hope - through AA, friendship, music, forgiveness, and the fierce power of love. It will break your heart—then heal it with laughter and song.

Beyond these iconic early roles, Waites has built a decades-spanning career in film, television, and theater. His television credits include multiple guest appearances on “Law & Order” (six times!), as well as “The Punisher,” “Homeland,” “OZ,” “NYPD Blue,” “All My Children,” and “One Life to Live”. On stage, he starred opposite Al Pacino in American Buffalo, appeared on Broadway in Search and Destroy with Griffin Dunne, rocked out in the cult musical Teaneck Tanzi with Debbie Harry and shared the stage with Dick Latessa and Frances McDormand in Awake and Sing!.
