Russian Film Week in New York

Russian Film Week in New York (RFWNY) was co-founded and successfully re-launched by the 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organizations, Cherry Orchard Festival Foundation (USA) and Rock Studio Films (Russia) in 2018. This partnership aims to develop a multi-state, annual week-long showcase, in an effort to present independent, commercial, documentary and arthouse Russian films with subtitles to mainstream US audiences.

More than 30 events were presented during the first Russian Film Week in December 2018, including free and paid screenings, movie premieres, screenings and events for kids, free community events, panels, Q&A discussions with artists and directors, press events, and opening/closing night private/semi-private receptions. In June of 2019, Cherry Orchard Festival presented free screenings of two Russian films (with subtitles) at New York’s Wolfe's Pond Park in Staten Island, as part of the NY City Council’s Cultural Initiative, supported by New York City Councilman Joseph C. Borelli (district 51).

About the presenters:

Rock Studio Films (Russia) was founded by director Alexey Uchitel in 1991. Since then the Studio has produced 45 films, both feature and documentaries. Our films received over 100 awards at different international film festivals and were distributed theatrically both in Russia and abroad. They include The Major (Cannes IFF) and The Fool (Locarno IFF) by Yury Bykov, More by Alexandra Strelyanaya (Karovy Vary IFF) and others. Apart from film production, Rock Films is behind 2 festivals – Message To Man in Saint Petersburg and Russian Film Week in London.

Cherry Orchard Festival (CherryOrchardFestival.org) is a leading independent international arts organization with a solid reputation for presenting musical performances, theatrical productions, multi-disciplinary performing and visual arts attractions by a stunning array of global artists to audiences in US. The inaugural Festival took place in May 2013. Now embarking on its 7th season, the festival has presented 55+ unique world-class events, concerts and theatrical performances to over 90,000 audience members.

Our mission is to promote global cultural activity and exchange of ideas through entertaining and educational programming, and to increase diversity by offering cultural programming for audiences whose primary language is not English.

We believe that high-quality, thought-provoking performances, at the cutting edge of artistic creation, build bridges between cultures and promote dialogue among artists and audiences of diverse backgrounds. Supported by the Cherry Orchard Festival Foundation, the Festival has grown in scope and reputation, and remains committed to providing the finest entertainment, exceptional musical performances and enlightening educational programs to our patrons.

SVA Theatre is the cultural center of New York’s artistically-vibrant Chelsea neighborhood. The Theatre serves the School of Visual Arts, the arts and entertainment industries, and the community at large as a stage for the presentation of noteworthy artistic work. From film screenings to artist lectures to design conferences and more, SVA Theatre hosts a variety of events year-round, many of which are free and open to the public. ● RFWNY provides access to the screening events to everyone by offering exciting programming and affordable tickets, as well as a variety of free events

● Using the iconic SVA Theatre as the mainevent venue, RFW will feature events and screenings throughout the city, engaging 10+ venues, including several theaters at NY-area Colleges and Universities, where screenings will be offered free of charge.

● RFWNY presented 15 films, conducted 18 events and welcomed 30+ filmmakers in 2018

● RFWNY welcomed over 4,500+ paid visitors the first year at the SVA Theater. We plan to add screening locations in New York City and double the attendance by 2020. Currently headquartered in New York, RFW is planning to open chapters in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington DC
