Beauty you can wear:
Maasai, Kenya, collar necklaces, wear as chokers to 18”. They can be extended by attaching fine similar color ribbons to the ends.
Some African art pieces belong on the wall, others belong with you!
These beautiful Maasai, collar necklaces from Kenya, bring together vibrant beadwork, intricate patterns, and silver cut accents in designs that feel both distinctly African and wonderfully contemporary.
As we say in fashion, you can dress them up or down, or let them become the statements by themselves. At Ashione Gallery, we love 💕 objects that carry cultural beauty into everyday life.

Small in scale. Large in meaning!
Not every important African art object was monumental.
Effectiveness in this regard was gaged through-
Presence
Authority
Abstraction , and,
Spiritual weight.
Its power also lay in its visual economy.
No, this object didn’t need to be two feet tall!!

Not all African art was monumental.
Kota, Gabon - Ancestral Reliquary Figure. Appr. 10”.
Some of the most compelling African sculptures were never intended to be monumental. This small Kota figure from Gabon demonstrates that beautifully.
Created in a highly distilled geometric language, the figure carries a remarkable sense of presence. Its compact scale does not diminish its importance. Rather, its power is concentrated - reduced to essential forms, but charged with meaning.
Kota reliquary figures traditionally served as guardians associated with reliquaries containing the revered remains of ancestors. They stood above these containers, marking and protecting the connection between the living and the departed. Museum collections document this tradition in Gabon, including examples dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The figure reminds us that scale has never been a reliable measure of importance in African art. A sculpture need not tower over a room to command it. Sometimes, ten inches is enough.
