Shin Haus is proud to showcase the work of Sarah Davidson. Each of the pieces in Davidson’s focused oeuvre represent the complex relationships between natural and constructed worlds. Their scenes are an affective hybrid between the surreal and the biomorphic, and leave a strong aural impression before the eye can fully parse them.
Deftly rendered foliage falls back to reveal the permeable outlines of organisms, which in turn alchemize anew under the pressure of the audience’s gaze. Davidson’s surreal –scapes are multi-valent and multi-layered: They cannot be read altogether in one plane. Davidson’s works don’t just speak for themselves, they look for themselves too: Floating eyes are hidden in the background of their compositions, or stare out underneath leaves, waiting to be discovered so that they can turn the tables on the roles of object and observer.
Davidson articulates their compositions with complete control, and allows their technique to bolster their themes. Strokes which create direction suddenly bend into texture, and the longer you look you realize that the area you are dissecting has actually been concealing a critter depicted with evocative, gestural lines.
