Drift is a 5 by 7 charcoal and pencil drawing that invites you into a quiet moment of presence and reflection. It shows a solitary figure standing waist-deep in water, facing away, surrounded by soft ripples that speak to the subtle connection between stillness and movement. The monochromatic tones and delicate shading create a space where vulnerability and strength coexist. Living with Multiple Sclerosis, I often feel caught between uncertainty and acceptance—this piece is my way of honoring that balance and embracing the path toward light. Through Drift, I hope to remind others that even in moments of solitude and challenge, there is a quiet resilience that carries us forward. QuietPower

Contain is a quiet reflection on the spaces we hold within—our bodies and spirits as vessels of memory and strength. This small 5 by 7-inch drawing, created with pencil and charcoal, reveals a solitary figure seated on a cylindrical pedestal. The figure’s open posture forms a strong silhouette against a textured background, while a simple table holds a rounded vase, contrasting geometric shapes with the human form.

Inspired by urns that hold ashes, Contain explores the idea of the body as a vessel for the spirit. This theme is deeply personal, reflecting my experience living with multiple sclerosis—the wish for a new, stronger body and the balance between fragility and resilience.

The drawing’s textured shading and slightly abstract style invite a quiet, intimate moment with the figure, capturing stillness and endurance. Contain reminds us that even when our bodies feel fragile, the spirit remains boundless.

Hello,
Aureole is a 5 by 7 inch (6.5” x 8.5” framed) drawing in pencil and charcoal that explores the tension between darkness and light. The composition features a solitary silhouette standing quietly on the left, head slightly bowed, hands in pockets—a moment of inward reflection. To the right, a radiant circular light pulses outward in swirling patterns, symbolizing hope and energy breaking through shadow. This piece was inspired by Plato’s cave, a reminder to turn away from darkness and move toward positivity. Creating it was a way to acknowledge my own struggles while seeking light in the uncertainty. Through this work, I invite you to consider the quiet power of introspection and the strength found in choosing illumination.

Still is a 5 by 7 inch pencil and charcoal drawing that explores solitude through a simple, yet powerful silhouette standing alone in a field of tall grass. Inspired by Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World,” this piece reflects the quiet isolation I experience living with multiple sclerosis. The winding path and distant houses suggest a rural landscape that feels both familiar and unreachable, echoing the emotional distance MS can create. Working with soft shading and bold contrasts allowed me to capture the subtle textures and moods of this moment—one of contemplation, stillness, and resilience.

Respite is a 5 by 7 inch pencil and charcoal drawing on paper that captures a moment of quiet surrender. The figure, rendered as a dark silhouette bent over a simple block, conveys a deep sense of fatigue and reflection—feelings that often come with living with Multiple Sclerosis. There are no detailed features, only the weight of the posture and textured shading that give form to exhaustion and introspection. Creating this piece was an honest expression of those days when the invisible burden feels overwhelming and all I want is to rest. Through this work, I hope to share that experience with others who understand the complex emotions that chronic illness brings.

Stillness is a 5 by 7 inch charcoal and pencil drawing on paper that captures a quiet, contemplative moment in a hospital room. A simple bed with blankets piled to one side anchors the scene, while a dark silhouette stands framed by a doorway behind it. This figure represents the tense pause I felt—when the mind remains active but the body is held still by illness. Creating this piece was a way to express the isolation and helplessness I experienced living with MS, especially during those long hours when movement felt out of reach but the need to be present was urgent. Through soft shading and deep contrasts, I wanted to evoke that fragile space between rest and unrest, where silence carries its own weight.

Quiet Companion is a 5 by 7 inch drawing in charcoal and pencil. It shows a figure walking with a cane, their shadow stretching ahead and shifting into a darker, less defined shape. This piece reflects the moment I accepted my own vulnerability and the quiet presence that came with using a cane. It’s a simple meditation on movement, time, and how memory lingers alongside the present.

Plummet is a 5” x 7” charcoal and pencil drawing. It shows a dark figure upside down against a textured gray background, capturing the disorienting, fragile feeling of falling as experienced by someone living with Multiple Sclerosis. This artwork reflects the physical and emotional vulnerability—the sudden loss of balance, control, and certainty—that comes with the symptoms of MS. The simplicity of the form and color emphasizes that delicate tension between struggle and surrender. Threshold Glow is a 5 by 7 inch charcoal and pencil drawing on paper. It shows a dark silhouette standing with arms outstretched, centered between two open doorways that cast beams of light toward the figure and the floor. The drawing explores moments of transition and choice, where light offers a path forward. Creating this piece, I was reflecting on the healing power of light—and the search for alternative cures that bring hope.
Stillness is a 5 by 7 inch charcoal and pencil drawing on paper. It shows a simple bed with blankets piled on one side. Behind it stands a dark silhouette framed by a doorway, a quiet presence in a heavy, shadowed space. This piece grew from my experience in the hospital—feeling isolated and trapped in the pause between movement and rest. Living with MS, I wanted to express that fragile moment where the mind races but the body cannot follow.
Quiet Companion is a 5 by 7 inch drawing in charcoal and pencil on paper. It shows a figure walking with a cane, casting a shadow that shifts into a darker, less defined shape ahead. This piece reflects a moment of acceptance—the realization of fragility in strength. Making this work was a way to confront that shift, to explore movement and memory through simple forms and stark contrasts.

Halcyon is a 5” x 7” pencil and charcoal drawing that explores the delicate balance between growth and decay. In this piece, a seated human silhouette merges with a tree whose left side thrives with dense leaves, while the right side reveals bare branches and roots. This contrast reflects the duality I experience living with Multiple Sclerosis—days of strength and days of struggle. The textured background supports an organic, almost meditative atmosphere, inviting reflection on our connection to nature and the passage of time. https://garytrente.com

Breakthrough is a 5” x 7” drawing in charcoal, ink, and pencil. It shows a single figure standing under a broken ceiling where light pours in, casting shadows around. The silhouette is solid black against a textured, dark background. This piece reflects my search for a way forward living with MS, focusing on the light even when everything feels fractured.
