Flower came to us almost 3 years ago

I was sitting at my desk when a young girl burst through the door of my quiet insurance office yelling “he’s dying! Mike is dying!” In her arms, she held a convulsing, urine stained piggy with severe bumblefoot, mucus covering his nose, a head tilt, and in g.i. stasis.

She was right. Mike was dying.

I hopped up from my desk, grabbed my critical care and got right to syringe feeding him and warming him up at my desk. The girl let me know she had just gotten him from someone rehoming him, he was 4 years old, and had never been taken out of his small cage in the previous owners garage. She wanted to help him, but his critical condition was a bit too far out of her wheelhouse.

I couldn’t bring myself to call this sweet boy Mike. It just didn’t fit. But as I cleaned him up and got to know him that day, I was reminded of the sweet little skunk from Bambi.

Flower was diagnosed with severe bulla disease, dental disease, arthritis, pretty much everything a guinea pig could possibly be diagnosed with. I did not have much faith in his ability to recover, but we didn’t give up on him. And thank goodness we didn’t, because he has given us almost 3 wonderfully happy years of head bobbles, celery munching, and angry stares when the pea flakes are put away.

Flower is now 7 and in gi stasis. His foster family took him into the vet today to find a mass in the abdomen. His quality of life is poor, and the prognosis is very guarded.

As I often say, I am not in this business to keep guinea pigs putzing along for as long as possible. I am not here to make them suffer until they can’t hang on anymore. I am here to do what is in their best interest, even when it’s hard.

So we are saying goodbye 💔

We will miss him and his silly antics so much.

Traci and Kristin, I cannot thank you enough for all you have done for our special boy. You have tended to all of his special needs and exceeded all expectations of caring for him. I am so grateful he was able to experience so much love in his final years. I couldn’t have done this without you. I’m so sorry for your loss.
