What does unity actually look like? Ketch Secor says he sees it every night from the stage. 🎻

At an Old Crow Medicine Show concert, the front row is a cross-section of everyone: every color, faith, political persuasion, all bobbing along to the same song. In our Q&A following the Louder Than Guns screening at Take Action x SXSW, Ketch called it the best seat in the house, watching people who’d probably argue about everything else stand shoulder to shoulder, genuinely happy to be there together.

His question for the room: if music can do that, why can’t everything else?

It’s the kind of moment that keeps him optimistic, and it’s exactly why these conversations matter as much as the film itself.

Thank you to Ketch Secor and Mark Barden for joining us at Take Action x SXSW.

Most kids don’t choose their trusted adult. They just notice who shows up.

You don’t have to be a parent or a teacher for that to be you. Plenty of artists on this platform have heard from a fan, a student, someone at a show, that their music or their willingness to just listen made a hard year survivable. That’s not a small thing. That’s the role.

If you’ve ever been that person for someone, even without realizing it in the moment, this one’s for you.

This September, Sandy Hook Promise’s Start With Hello Week (Sept 21-25) is asking all of us, artists included, to be a little more intentional about it: to build the kind of connection that helps kids feel less alone before they ever get to a crisis point.

Artist For Action partners with Sandy Hook Promise because artists already have this influence. This is about using it well.

Mark Barden, co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise and Artist For Action, spoke to what comes next after that mix of emotion, dread, and hope: action. Through the work of Sandy Hook Promise, 19 school shootings have been stopped by students trained in Sandy Hook Promise’s programs.

Mark’s message was clear and practical: get involved with something. Have honest conversations with people in your community. Support an organization already doing this work. It doesn’t have to be adversarial. Sometimes a little information, shared kindly, goes a long way.

Thank you to Mark Barden and everyone who joined us for this conversation at Take Action x SXSW.

Following our Louder Than Guns screening, journalist David Greene spoke about a coalition of law enforcement, public health experts, and mental health professionals working to spread awareness around gun safety locks, an effort that took years to get off the ground, and even longer to gain trust on both sides.

David shared how gun owners and non-gun owners alike often assumed the worst about each other’s intentions. It took two years of real conversation to get to a simple, shared realization: everyone at the table wanted the same thing. Safety. And that gun owners themselves often know more about gun safety than anyone else, making their voices essential to the conversation, not separate from it.

Real solutions start with real conversations, even the difficult ones.

Louder Than Guns follows Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show and journalist David Greene as they travel across rural, urban, and suburban America, sitting down with survivors, gun owners, police officers, and parents to find common ground on one of the country’s most polarizing issues. The film, directed by Doug Pray, takes its name from a song Ketch wrote in the wake of the Covenant School shooting in Nashville.

In our post-screening Q&A, Ketch spoke to what it takes to move people from passive empathy into real action. His point: it’s easy to feel for a tragedy and move on, since none of us can take on every cause. But real change often starts when it becomes personal, when it’s your school, your park, your neighborhood suddenly touched by violence.

His message was simple: pick your battles, but once you pick yours, don’t just feel something. Do something.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Katsis.

Peter played an essential role in helping us launch Artist For Action alongside Gavin Rossdale and BUSH. From our launch at Irving Plaza and its livestream to Good Morning America, the AFA / Artists & Athletes dinner and so much more, Peter helped bring the initiative to life.

Over a 35-year career, Peter helped shape the careers of some of music’s biggest names, from Backstreet Boys and Korn to Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, Morrissey, and BUSH. He helped take the Backstreet Boys from arenas to stadiums and later brought Smashing Pumpkins back as arena headliners, work that made him one of the industry’s most respected managers.

What we’ll remember most is that Peter always made time. He was willing to jump on the phone, talk through an idea or challenge and help us find the best way forward. His heart was always in the right place, both for the mission and for his client.

We can’t thank Peter enough for his belief, partnership and everything he did for Artist For Action. We send our love to his family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.

Paul has been a Meals on Wheels West client for 10 years. He’s a singer. He’s been in a band since he was seven years old. And when Tiger La Flor showed up at his door, they had more in common than either of them expected.

Artist For Action® joined the Foundation for Social Connection ACTION NETWORK and Meals on Wheels West in Santa Monica for a meal delivery that was about a lot more than food. Nearly half of Americans report feeling lonely or socially isolated. For homebound seniors, programs like Meals on Wheels provide something medicine alone can’t: a friendly face, a consistent presence, and a reason to feel connected.

A couple of minutes can change a person’s whole outlook on life. That’s the Come Together mission.

In ancient Athens, the hospital was built next to the theater. Because the theater was part of the treatment.

Coyle Girelli of Calm and Collected Music and Cayley Tull of Let Music Fill My World at Take Action x SXSW on why the idea of prescribing music and art as therapy isn’t new, it’s a circle we’re finally coming back around to.

The medical community is catching up to something humanity has always known. Sound heals.
