Flash Footage: Principal Dancer Emma Von Enck opening last night's world premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's Paquita.

For his new work for the Company, Ratmansky combined two sections from Marius Petipa’s 19th-century classical ballet Paquita: the Grand Pas, restaged based on extensive research into the original and its history, and George Balanchine’s Minkus Pas de Trois.

“There's nothing comparable to getting as close to the source as possible, hearing things that you would never hear by watching a tape. There's a soul to a ballet, and the greatest way of passing that on is person to person. It's almost like magic," shares Repetiteur Marina Eglevsky on maintaining the tradition of handing down ballets in person.

Eglevsky visited the NYCB studios in January to coach a ballet that haven't been performed in over three decades, Sylvia: Pas de Deux. She shares a personal connection to this pas de deux, as her father, André Eglevsky, partnered with Maria Tallchief during his debut in 1951.

“I’ve always enjoyed doing something different at City Ballet from what I’ve done before,” Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky told The New York Times. His newest work for the company, Paquita, represents a significant departure from last year’s Solitude—and the six other ballets he’s created on NYCB.

Host and Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan is back with another intimate New Combinations conversation, joined this week by Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky. They discuss the origins—both within history and in Ratmansky's own career—of the Petipa ballet Paquita, excerpts of which provide the foundations for his newest ballet for the company. Ratmansky explains his use of Balanchine's Minkus Pas de Trois in revisiting this "feast of classical dancing," and the ways in which his work brings extensive research into conversation with the vocabulary of today's dancers.
