“Graffiti is like building a career. And there is a dialogue with the other artists out there mostly fellow writers because a lot of people who don’t paint just see a blur when they look at it.” —

Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, began his career as a graffiti writer in Jersey City before transitioning into the global art world. His early days tagging walls and subways honed not just his technical skills but his sense of dialogue, an exchange with fellow writers that shaped how he views art as a continuous conversation. That ethos carried into his paintings, sculptures and collectibles, where he bridges street culture with contemporary fine art, reminding us that the grind of graffiti and the building of a career share the same relentless pursuit.

“I enjoy strategies if you can get away with it.” —

We asked to pick a random line from ‘Hirst-isms’ to read on camera. By chance, he landed on this one. It fits—both he and Hirst thrive on risk, turning wild ideas into strategies that somehow work. Hirst did it with sharks in formaldehyde. Kidsuper does it with fashion shows that feel more like performance art.

Hirst-isms is a collection of bold, surprising, and often irreverent quotations from Damien Hirst, the Young British Artist who redefined contemporary art in the 1990s and beyond.
