FINAL WEEK TO APPLY

Strange Homes - “Where the familiar becomes uncertain.”

Home is often imagined as a place of comfort, intimacy, and stability. Yet it can also hold tension, distance, uncertainty, and change. Strange Homes considers how domestic life, family relationships, memory, privacy, routine, and displacement shape our experience of space, and how the familiar can gradually become unfamiliar.

We are interested in works that reflect on the emotional, psychological, social, or architectural dimensions of home. Submissions do not need to depict a literal house or interior. We welcome practices that approach the idea of home through lived experience, personal memory, spatial perception, or the structures that organize everyday life.

Selected artists will be included in a curated online group exhibition on Rexhibit, with award recognition, a dedicated exhibition page, a digital catalog, and opportunities for future collaboration.

Deadline: October 1, 2026, 11:59 PM ET

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Xinyu Liu, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Xinyu Liu:
“My practice spans video, sculpture, drawing, and installation, exploring how time, memory, and identity are shaped by movement across spaces. Rather than treating time as a linear measure of productivity, I approach it as a cyclical and embodied experience, one that is formed through repetition, waiting, distance, and return.

My work often begins with moments of transition: moving between places, entering unfamiliar environments, or sensing that one’s relationship to a space has shifted. I am interested in how memory is triggered by fragments of architecture, color, texture, and bodily orientation, and how these fragments form unstable psychological maps. Through small-scale objects, drawings, and spatial arrangements, I create quiet environments where traces of experience appear, disappear, and reassemble.

Rather than presenting identity as fixed, my work considers the self as something continually shaped by movement, memory, and displacement. I linger in the tension between stability and instability, where boundaries remain open and belonging is felt as temporary, partial, and in flux.”

Forms of Attention — “Where Perception Becomes Form” brings together ten artists whose works engage with attention, memory, material, space, and bodily perception. The exhibition considers how looking takes place, what enters our field of vision, what is habitually overlooked, and how art can reorganize the ways we perceive and understand the world around us.

Birds in the Dense Forest, 2025
Oil on canvas
39.4 × 47.2 in

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Wanlin Yan, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Wanlin Yan:
“The themes of my paintings are all related to many natural elements, such as plants, mountains, rivers, and so on. Of course, there is also always one or more figures connected with them. I often feel that nature has a healing effect on human beings, so what I create is a dream with a natural atmosphere, using slightly subdued colors and a compositional approach in which plants surround and encircle the figures, creating a sense of safety as if being embraced.

I prefer to use regular shapes to express the image, which gives me a sense of order. I extract objective forms and combine them seriously, allowing the forms to reveal a framework that goes beyond objectivity within their seriousness. This forms relatively simple shapes. I prefer this freedom of form, as it makes my imagination freer.

……

Occasionally encountering flying birds, quiet and light. These are all the emotions I want to express in my work.”

Chain Transformation, 2025
Oil on canvas
19.7 × 23.6 in

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Linjue Zhao, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Linjue Zhao:
“Chain Transformation: New Life takes the DNA double helix structure as its core visual image, attempting to discuss the relationship between life, the female body, and self-reconstruction. The blue DNA chain suspended in darkness gradually appears under the illumination of the light beam, pointing not only to the most fundamental genetic code of life, but also becoming a symbol of identity, memory, and continuation.

The ”she“ in the work is not passively shaped or defined, but regenerates herself within the life structure that is constantly twisting, stretching, and changing. The form of the double helix contains both the order of life‘s continuation and suggests the constant changes of the individual in time and experience. The moment when the light beam cuts through the darkness is like an awakening, and also like the process in which life reaffirms its own existence from chaos.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Yong Zheng, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Yong Zheng:
“My practice is rooted in oil painting and uses figurative visual language to examine the psychological conditions of contemporary life. In the Nothingness series, imagery associated with time, space, virtuality, and dolls functions as a set of psychological metaphors. Through soft, restrained monochromatic tones, I blur the boundary between reality and imagination, exploring feelings of loneliness, alienation, and unspoken inner emptiness. For me, painting is a process of looking inward.

Rather than creating dramatic visual conflict, I seek to leave space for empathy and reflection within quiet images, while continuing to uncover the hidden emotional states beneath the surface of everyday life.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Nanxing Zheng, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Nanxing Zheng:
“My practice centers on memory, space, and ways of seeing, with mineral pigments as my primary medium. I am interested in how experiences of growing up, cultural migration, and the passage of time reshape the way we understand everyday life. People, spaces, and once-familiar objects may gradually blur or shift over time, taking on new meanings in memory. This process of transformation has become a recurring starting point in my work. The granular texture, transparency, and layered qualities of mineral pigments resonate with the way memory accumulates, fades, and resurfaces.

Rather than attempting to faithfully reconstruct a particular moment from the past, I use color, material, and spatial relationships to reorganize personal experiences and create new ways of seeing within the image. For me, painting is a way of reconsidering the relationship between the past and the present. I seek to preserve experiences that are changing, disappearing, or can no longer be fully verified, allowing my work to remain suspended between the familiar and the unfamiliar, reality and memory, while preserving a sense of uncertainty.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Yiwen Sun, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Yiwen Sun:
“Yiwen Sun‘s interdisciplinary practice is grounded in material and spatial exploration, employing installation, interactive objects, painting, and mixed media as vehicles for artistic research. Drawing from everyday objects and lived experiences, she investigates subtle states of boundaries embedded within public environments, intimate relationships, and individual memory - conditions that often remain unnoticed in everyday life.

Yiwen seeks to construct diverse experiences of perception and viewing, frequently engaging the audience through physical participation and embodied experience. Her work encourages viewers to confront situations and psychological experiences that are easily overlooked in reality. Rather than offering predetermined conclusions, her practice creates open perceptual fields that disrupt habitual ways of seeing, inviting viewers to slow down their attention and reconsider the complex connections between the individual, their surroundings, others, and their own memories.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Jianuo Zhang, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Jianuo Zhang:
“My practice primarily explores the relationships between photography, reconstruction, and defamiliarization. The visual materials in my paintings initially originate from my own photographic images. Through processes of re-cropping, rearrangement, and recombination, I enlarge the sensations and emotional impressions that original objects evoke in me. This process creates a greater distance from the objective reality of the image while simultaneously strengthening my subjective emotional connection with it.

In terms of material practice, I mainly combine spray gun techniques with oil painting. The visual qualities created by the spray gun correspond more closely to contemporary ways of encountering images, producing surfaces that resemble printed materials or photographic textures. Through the tension between mechanical reproduction and handmade intervention, I explore the changing relationship between images, perception, and personal experience in the digital era.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Youyuan Wang, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Youyuan Wang:
“My artistic practice has long focused on the cross-media translation between abstract painting and music. To me, musicality in painting is not a mechanical imitation of external forms. Instead, it utilizes color, brushstrokes, and visual logic to transform abstract auditory experiences into liveable visual spaces. In my creative process, I seek to dissolve sensory boundaries. By combining the subjective spontaneity of watercolor with the layered color application of oil painting, I establish an intuitive, perception-based “audio-visual” conversion system, through which I achieve emotional alignment and art therapy within a highly focused state of creative flow.

The exhibited series, In Between, is a direct practice of this trajectory. This work is inspired by the instrumental music of composer Akira Kosemura. I take the quiet, cozy feeling of the sound and bring it into the canvas, giving the painting room to breathe. By softening the edges and leaving open spaces, I create a safe place for emotions to rest—finding a natural balance between control and chance.”

In this edition of Forms of Attention, we highlight the work of Mimi Pinnow, one of ten participating artists in the exhibition.

Gaëlle Solange Étémé:
“”The etymology of the form“ is a prayer, a Gregorian chant. Between touches of green and ochre-yellow pigments, a labyrinth of time‘s history seems to open within the heart of a calligraphic script. Ancient. The mystique of song in painting summons the voice to the brush, and suddenly, the observer fades away, leaving only the possibility of a heart that observes and vibrates, in prayer and song.

The etymology of the form is the place of dwelling, anchored in a foreign fabric, rescued, soiled, and yet so alive! Green is the color of questioning. Yellow, that of ablution. The work is created on a remnant of canvas. Base dye with natural turmeric-based pigment, diluted acrylic, writing in India ink and accents of oil paint.”
