When I was a kid, I was fascinated with the sounds coming out of the upright piano I had at home. Driven by the child’s curiosity, I used to open the cover to discover the world of wood and wire hidden inside the piano. I was obsessed with the mechanics of it, plucking the strings directly and using the sustain pedal to hear the notes bleed into each other in a very satisfying way. Those thick bass strings had a ringing and hypnotic sound that kept me there exploring the piano for hours, and that built a deep connection to this fascinating instrument…
In fact, the black and white keys were just the surface of that instrument. The real music happened inside the body of the piano…
That was my connection and exploration of the piano. What was your first interaction with a piano? Whether you play or just listen, I’d love to hear your story.
World piano day is today (the 88th day of the year, a reference to the 88 keys of the piano). Happy World Piano Day!
