What happens when an artist experiences an ego death?

For Rowan Foley, that meant surrendering control, letting go of the need for approval, and giving herself permission to make “bad art.” This shift led Rowan into a new relationship with her work, where abstraction became a way to explore parts of herself she had yet to fully acknowledge, while making peace with her shadow.

“Making art has made my understanding of myself both clearer and more complicated.”

In our latest conversation, artist Dwight Zhang reflects on those “stubborn stains” of life and what it means to accept uncertainty rather than always trying to resolve it.

Sometimes, the more we understand ourselves, the more there is to understand. For Dwight, painting has become a space where clarity and uncertainty can exist side by side. Every question leads to another question, and somewhere within them is the understanding that we are not alone.

A new chapter for Selfless Art Gallery.

After several years in New York City, we are excited to share that Selfless has relocated to San Diego, California.

New York will always be an important part of our story. It was where Selfless began, where we met incredible artists and collectors, and where so much of what we are today took form.

But California has always felt like home. Its connection to wellness, spirituality, balance, slowing down, and being present has always resonated with the way we see art and life.

From the beginning, we have chosen to grow Selfless organically and intentionally. Every follow, interaction, and connection has come from a genuine appreciation for the art and what we stand for. It has meant growing at a slower pace, but it has also allowed us to cultivate a community that genuinely connects with Selfless.

This move also marks an important step for the gallery. California is where we are looking to establish our first permanent physical location, creating a space where Selfless can continue to grow while remaining true to the values that have guided us from the beginning.

As we begin this next chapter, we are excited for what is ahead: more artist interviews, collaborations, new releases, and much more.
