I believe in the power of holding Compassion in the Dark.
And from this belief, a new perspective formed.
I now like to say (and I fully believe from experience): What we call, Darkness, is just a trick of the light, beckoning us to know it more intimately.
For instance, this creepy little guy was created as a prop for a scene I performed in. He had to appear as an owl carved out of stone, perched on a building, that survived being blown up (when the building did not). He is a symbol of love, connection, and our inner child in the play - but one might think he is there to represent nightmares, just by looking at him.
When we decide to turn towards that which scares us most with the curiosity of compassion, we suddenly find ourselves in conversation, rather than battle.
And when theater can bring us this type of experience, I get really really excited!
What does Darkness mean to you?
[The play referenced is Gruesome Playground Injuries, by Rajiv Joseph]
