Discovery, wonder, and the unexpected are important to us and are strongly represented in the garden and spaces. The plants are an idealized woodland, dressed-up cousins of what might have grown along the edges of fields and farms past. Birds, bees and butterflies are invited back. The buildings “breathe” with automated natural ventilation. Fountains and water features collect and recycle stormwater for irrigation. A decade of design and construction led to a complex and interwoven series of architectural ideas that coalesced into a rare and unexpected nature retreat in New York City. Carroll Hall was more than a venue for a recent full-day women’s retreat with The Grand World. It was a space that let the day flow creatively, moving their community through rooms and conversations that felt both grounding and expansive.

From breakfast and keynote speakers inside the hall, to community building and a luncheon in the garden, to hand massages in the treehouse, every corner of our indoor-outdoor venue held something intentional.

This late August wedding moved through Carroll Hall the way a perfect evening should.

Getting ready in the mezzanine; pre-ceremony portraits and a groomsmen toast in the garden; a bridal shoot along the treehouse path; a birds-eye view of the bridal party; a gorgeous indoor ceremony; a garden dinner reception full of love, food, and dancing.

This gorgeous wedding seamlessly flowed through our space in just the way we imagined when we opened our doors. Marilyn and Jordy added their own special touches. This is a day we will never forget.

This Earth Day, we pause to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Nan Schaffer, a pioneering exotic-animal veterinarian who was also a major force in Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community as an activist and philanthropist.

Dr. Schaffer dedicated her life to protecting Sumatran rhinos, one of the world’s most endangered species, leading groundbreaking research and publishing numerous scientific contributions that continue to guide conservation efforts today. Her impact was recognized with two distinguished medals, a testament to a lifetime devoted to preserving wildlife and the natural world.

At Carroll Hall, our mission has always been rooted in a deep respect for nature and the interconnectedness between people, plants, and animals. Dr. Schaffer’s work is a powerful reminder of why that mission matters.

Today, we honor her legacy and recommit ourselves to protecting the environment, nurturing our garden, and creating a space where nature can be celebrated, protected, and shared.
