A few important notes:
Music lessons are not a service that a teacher provides. It is not mandatory for everyone to learn music either. However, if one decides to initiate learning, there are a few mandatory requirements.
1. Classes must be regular, based on the advice of the teacher.
2. Proper communication is absolutely mandatory if there is a problem with scheduling, of course mutually.
3. Random announcements for skipping a class are NOT acceptable.
4. Patience, interest and discipline are imperative to learning any subject.
5. Finally: A student pays for the time that the teacher spends. Please initiate if you understand that you are NOT purchasing a service whenever you want to. In case of genuine financial inability, it is the teacher who may waive at his or her discretion.
6. This is a huge commitment and dedication from either side. I would encourage all prospective students to understand and then make up your mind.
7. Irregularity, casual attitude in communication and lack of sincerity would not work.
I wrote this on behalf of all teachers of music or fine arts as this has become a trend now and our politeness is often misconstrued as a weakness. I hope to see a brighter day in the field of professionalism.

Sharing a marvellous of a dadra by our Guru, more precisely, the nuances of the here and its appropriate manifestation. Students of music may find this post very useful , especially those who are interested in learning the balanced use of notes and shrutis in a semi-classical genre of Hindustani Vocal Music.
Please use headphones 🎧 for clarity.
Thank you.

In search of light

I have been learning Hindustani Classical Vocal Music, under the tutelage of my guru Sri Anjan Majumdar, a renowned trainer of vocal music and composer of Bengali songs, since 2015. Although I was introduced to vocal music at the age of 6, back in the early 80s, my learning mostly focussed on songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, under my first guru Late. Smt. Chhandita Datta. Much later, I also learnt Rabindrasangeet from Sri. Suranjan Roy for about three years, in 2012. In addition to these, I was fortunate to have received short time tutelage from Smt. Anasua Mukhopadhyay, Smt. Krishna Ghosal, Sri Pratap Roy, Smt. Banani Ghosh, Smt. Pratima Chatterjee and Sri Arnab Chatterjee, at different times of my journey.

However,It was not until 2015, when I realized severe difficulty in my vocal throwings, understanding of notes and capability of composing short innovations in Bengali Ragasroyee Compositions. Although I had a moderately sincere habit of listening to a huge gamut of Hindustani instrumental and vocal music, I was not confident of learning khyal at this advanced age; rather was interested in improving my voice and continue with Nazrulgeeti and other Bengali songs, with the hope of a better rendering, in terms of vocal range, clarity and modulations. It will not be exaggerating at all to say, that, had it not been for the exceptional and methodical approach of my guru’s tutelage, I would not have been inspired to pursue khyal and semi-classical singing.

I had to start my training almost from scratch, from articulating each note with breath control and learning to compose combinations following a melodic pattern, mostly outside the scope of an Hindustani Raaga. This way, it was really magical to experience the positions of notes with respect to Shadaj, as well as to develop skills to visualise the notation of any kind of song or music I heard. This being the essential component of my voice training, I started learing bandishes in Vilambit and drut and still see a new beginning each day, along with the hardships of the learning process. As a student of vocal music and having an astute interest in all genres of Bengali Music in particular, I feel like testing my abilities often by simple home recordings.

This is a rather formal initiative and separate from my facebook profile, for posting my humble attempts and seek valuable feedback of outstanding listeners. I also seek an opportunity of posting special compositions I find exceptionally interesting and useful to the development of my musical skills. The subject of Indian music is our treasure, and we, with the guidance of our gurus, can only try to be a tiny part of that treasure, even if we only keep listening quality music and appreciate. There is no short-cut to this learning, as all wise people have aptly said, but the greatest achievement would be in finding the right guru, and keep learning. I would like to receive thoughtful and unbiased feedback from music lovers and exponents. Thank you all very much.
