In 1966, Toshihisa Yoda boarded a ship bound for America with two suitcases packed with paint and personal belongings. During the two-week voyage, he recalls a rare feeling of calm — the stillness before a life of sustained artistic exploration.

Six decades later, that commitment remains unbroken.

Yoda’s paintings always return to a few enduring questions: What can a line do? How can color subtly impact the eye? How can geometry feel alive? How can repetition generate surprise? Rather than following the arc so often imposed on artists — early breakthrough, middle plateau, late repetition — his work has followed the cyclical rhythms of nature.

His relationship to what he once called “city nature” is the key to understanding these paintings. Carrying an attentiveness to seasonal change, plant structure, and organic rhythm from his rural upbringing into urban life, there is a meditative humility at the center of his practice — a quiet regard for the passage of time.

Toshihisa Yoda’s exhibition Continuum, 1967–Today is on show now at our new Tribeca home (40 Lispenard St).

Toshi’s life: 1960s-1990s

In 1966, Toshihisa Yoda left Japan. He arrived in New York City in 1967 and embedded himself in the downtown art scene at one of its most electric moments, committed from the start to an uncompromising vision that drew equally from Japanese tradition and the visual language of the city around him.

These images trace those early years, the move, the neighborhoods, the work, his family, his lofts, and the city he arrived in as an outsider and spent sixty years making his home.

This summer, we celebrate his ongoing legacy. Continuum, 1967–Today opens June 4 at NowHere, 40 Lispenard St, Tribeca, and is a survey of six decades of work by an artist whose presence helped define the very history we were built to honor.
The exhibition is presented in two parts:

[Part 1] 1960s–1990s: June 4 – July 2 | Tue–Sat
[Part 2] 2000s–Today: July 9 – August 7 | Mon–Fri

No extremities were lost and many new friends were gained! 🪓

Thank you to Future Fair and everyone who stopped by Booth R13 over the past few days! It was such a joy to share exonemo’s Hach/et with you.

Watching people engage with the work, spend time with it, talk about it, ask questions, that’s what it’s all about. The conversations and reactions made the whole experience.

Opening exhibition announcement

Toshihisa Yoda: Continuum, 1967-Today

For nearly sixty years, Toshihisa Yoda has painted in New York—steadily, on his own terms, and largely outside the fluctuations of fashion.

Opening our new space at 40 Lispenard Street, Continuum, 1967–Today presents a long-overdue survey of his practice through 30 selected works, from the 1960s to the present.

Presented in two parts, the exhibition traces the continuity of Yoda’s abstraction.

What a weekend. 🌀

Six shows. Six full houses. We are genuinely moved.
This was Maiko Kikuchi’s first open studio and her debut performances of ‘Kojiki de Creation’ and she set an incredibly high bar.

Drawing on Japan’s oldest mythological record and weaving it through video, objects, and masks into something so unique and hilarious, Maiko showed us what this work-in-progress is already capable of becoming. We can’t wait to see where it goes.

Thank you to every single person who came through Suite 434 this weekend. The energy you brought into that room made these performances what they were.
And thank you to for your continued support — we’re looking forward to a wonderful year of creations together.
