This one’s from the archives and love for music that took me around the world. A spontaneous trip to Belgrade, Serbia that ended up being one of the most creatively formative experiences of my life and early career as a documentarian.

I was documenting for myself at the time no plan, no budget, just my Canon 7D and the urge to observe. From the beats to the rakiya to the energy in the rooms, something about Serbia just clicked.

Fathers, 2024
Wood and acrylic on carved railroad ties

Originally exhibited in MASC, curated by Juanita Sunday and hosted by Norwalk Artspace. Grateful to both for holding space for work that bridges the personal and the historical.

About the piece:
Fathers began with a return, my first trip back to France to meet my father as a teen. The two standing forms reflect our heights at that time, marked with notches that symbolize the emotional and generational distance between us.

The wood, salvaged from a dock in Bridgeport, CT where many Black families, including my own, found work after migrating north—carries its own memory. I've always been interested in familiar and found objects like these that hold both banal and ancestral resonance.

A few images and moments from the process and the many iterations of Fathers over the years. A meditation on memory, labor, and lineage, the work honors those who came before by transforming the remnants of their world into something enduring.
