For most of human history, black holes were considered safely distant, lurking in the hearts of galaxies far beyond any conceivable threat to our solar system. That comfortable assumption was challenged when astronomers announced the discovery of Gaia BH1, a stellar mass black hole located just 1,560 light years from Earth, making it the closest known black hole ever confirmed.
