Woven into the landscape of Grand Hotel Vista Mare, two carpets by Barbro Nilsson help define the exhibition’s palette and atmosphere.

One of the leading figures of twentieth-century Swedish textile design, Nilsson was known for her expressive use of color and her ability to translate natural landscapes into woven form.

The contrasting tones of the two carpets echo the setting that inspired the exhibition: the warm ochres and yellows evoke the sand of the Venice Lido, while the blues recall the sea and sky beyond it.

Designed by Franco Albini as a private commission for Casa Carati and manufactured in 1945, this pair of armchairs reflects the Italian architect and designer’s refined approach to furniture design.

Executed in wood and fabric, the chairs bring together a restrained geometric structure with upholstered seats and backs, balancing clarity of construction with a distinctly modern expression.

Produced in 1954, these ceiling lamps by BBPR reflect the group’s approach to design, bringing functionality and form into balance through a simple yet striking structure.

Originally designed for the Olivetti showroom in New York, which opened in 1956, the lamps are composed of incamiciato lattimo glass and metal, balancing practical function with the modern elegance characteristic of BBPR’s work.

More than seventy years after they were conceived for Olivetti’s New York interior, the design returns to the city as part of Grand Hotel Vista Mare at Galerie56, in collaboration with Nilufar.

Designed by Gabriella Crespi in the 1970s, Monsieur Madame is a rare chest of drawers from her Unicum series, crafted in wood with polished brass panels.

Conceived as a quick-change object, the piece explores duality and transformation through an origami-like composition of drawers that unfold on both sides. Deep diagonal grooves intersect its polished surfaces, creating an illusionistic, almost Escherian effect as the form opens and transforms.

Designed by Gio Ponti and manufactured by Altamira in the late 1940s to early 1950s, this wooden bookshelf is an example of Ponti’s extensive contributions to public spaces and interiors.

Featuring distinctive wood motifs and multiple parallel shelves, the design achieves a harmonious balance between form, creativity, beauty and function, reflecting Ponti’s belief that design should transcend utility alone.

Throughout her work, Gabriella Crespi returned to the natural world as a source of inspiration, transforming animal forms into objects that move between sculpture, lighting and functional design.

Created throughout the 1970s, Crespi’s imaginative menagerie brings together the whimsical and the refined, from her sculptural Frog lamp to works in gilt metal, Murano glass and carved wood. Across these varied forms and materials, nature becomes a vehicle for experimentation, craftsmanship and play.

A rare extendable dining table by the legendary Carlo Mollino, designed around 1956 for Apartment O. at Casa del Sole in Cervinia.

Crafted by Ettore Canali in walnut and oak with a Formica surface, the table reflects Mollino’s distinctive approach to domestic design, balancing expressive form with an ingenious extension mechanism conceived for the flexible needs of alpine living.

The artworks featured in ‘Shades of Light’ signify the restorative capacities of craftmaking processes. Envisioning craft as an ongoing and changing mode in which material and artist are in a potent and formative relationship with each other, the works are formed through distinctly contemporary approaches to craft and design.
