Archie's Press

Archie's Press Simple Maps of Complicated Cities. New research indicates that GPS's are hindering our ability to create mental maps of our surroundings.

My maps aim to install a "Map from the Mind" for each city, simplifying structures and districts in the simplest terms. The circle, our Universe's softest shape, clearly conveys size and connections.

Where did these bags come from?

Risograph by alex luciano

In 1965, Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin invented bags made out of the plastic polyethylene, a substance created by accident in the 1930s

By the 1980s, stores everywhere were using these bags, largely replacing paper and reusable options

The bag has evolved from a practical item into an iconic symbol of city life, restaurants, and grocery stores

Their appearance in Chinatown restaurants and groceries stores have even made the bag a nostalgic symbol in Asian-American communities

With cities phasing out plastic bags in favor of more environmentally friendly options, designers and artists have found ways to pay tribute to the iconic design.

Come see their take on the idea at our shop in the East Village, 1st Ave and 10th St!

Born on July 6, 1907, iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is renowned for her work centering her culture, womanhood, disability, and politics.

Kahlo’s life was heavily impacted by the pain and disability caused by both her contraction of polio as a child and a traumatic bus accident at the age of 18. The long-term effects of such incidents can be seen when looking at her self-portraits, which often ruminate on chronic pain, national identity, and political activism. Her romantic life was intertwined with her practice and engagement with activism, as she was a committed member of the Mexican Communist Party and partner of the controversial fresco artist and dually dedicated activist Diego Rivera.
